Pistol or rifle ML?
« on: February 21, 2006, 06:23:43 AM »
I'm just got my encore 270 pistol the other day now I'm wanting to get a muzzleloader barrle I just dont know if I should get a pistol or rifle barrle.  I have read a few post about the pistol ml some say its just fine for deer out to 100yards and others say they dont have enough speed for deer past 50yrds. If I get the rifle barrle it gives me a reason to buy a stock and forend (lol) The other qustion I have is the 209x45 any better the the 209x50 or vice virsa?

I can not answer any ml pistol questions but if you chose the rifle go with the 50cal.

You have more bullet sabot options in 50cal. Makes more load development options possible.
keep your powder dry !!!

Either the 45 or 50 cal will work, I have taken deer with both and not one problem.

I'm interested in a hawken type pistol (percussion)... I can't believe it has a long effectiveness on deer (.50 cal). Anyone have experience?

With a long enough barrel (something around 10 inches) you should be able to get performance close to .44 special (maybe a little more). If you feel that is good enough for your hunting that is great. I only use a pistol for back-up when elk hunting. Saves an extra shot if animal is still alive when I get there. I don't deer hunt as the deer hunting in Arizona is not so good.
