Carribou Hunt for 2007
« on: February 19, 2006, 08:14:50 AM »
We have a group interested in hunting carribou in the Northwest Territories or Quebec. Given a choice we would perfer the Northwest Territories due to the possibilities of driving up to Yellow Knife from North Dakota then flying into the hunting camp. Any information on outfitters or how the road is into Yellow Knife would be appreciated.

The road to Yellowknife is very good, with regular service all the way up.  You have to be carefull not to hit a bison between Ft. Providence and Yellowknife though, seriously.  They are woods bison, and at least twice the size of those puny little plains bison.
I lived there for three years, and the hunting is excellent.  Check out Peterson point lodge.  Sorry short on time, more later.

Hello again.  Just got some more time.  Here is a link to the first of 5 caribou I harvested in 2004/05.  We usually hunt them in February after the horns are shed, but I managed to get out in November to take this one:

A few more things.  The only concern on the drive up, besides bison, is the ferry at Ft. Providence.  If you arrive after midnight you have to wait until 6:00 am to cross the McKenzie River.  Double check the times before you go.

Here is a link to the DNR folks in the Territories.

They are in the process of restructuring, but there is a lot of info there.  They also offered a free hunting video on caribou hunting traditional style that would be of interest.  Check out the site, and request the free video if there is a contact link.  Even if you don't go to the NWT for your hunt, the video is very informative.  Good luck in your decision.

Thank you very much folks for the information. We will probably go to YellowKnife since we can drive up and avoid the air fares for us and the animals. Dave you mentioned hitting the bison, down here you have to worry about hitting the moose. Dave when hunting in the NWT do you encounter grizzlies often? Thanks again for the help.

The picture link I sent; that animal was harvested about 2 miles from where a grizzly ate some guys skidoo seat.  There was blood on the seat from his hunt and the griz was hungry.  The bear was shot in Yellowknife city limits by a resources guy about a week later.  Usually the grizzly bears stick to the tundra about 120 miles north of Yellowknife, but this one was sick, hungry, had bad teeth and followed the caribou down with their migration.

Usually, there is no chance of seeing grizzly in the Yellowknife district, but like the freak incident in Nov. 2004 there is the minute possibility.  If you are lucky, you may see a few wolves, or maybe the odd black bear, but not a grizzly.

I am not sure about "trophy fees" in Quebec, but the NWT has pretty steep fees to bring trophies out of the territory.  They are listed with the license fees.  Make sure you factor in that cost when you consider going to Yellowknife.

Thanks again Dave for the information. As soon as the frost is out of the ground I will be starting my work in Saskatchewan and Alberta, I hope to be able to meet with some of the outfitters during that time. I believe we have a sports show coming up in Minot or Minneappolis in the spring, I will probably try to make those to see if any of the NWT outfitters are there. I know what you mean about the grizzlies, we hunt elk and mule deer in the Bob Marshall Wilderness by Kalispell, Montana out of a spike camp and grizzly precautions are a neccessity. None in North Dakota yet, just mountain lions and wolves. Thanks again for the help.
