Cast in K31 vs Winchester 30-30
« on: February 20, 2006, 06:06:30 AM »
I tried the same cast bullet in my Swiss K31 rifle that I have had great luck with in my 30-30. I have fired almost a thousand rounds in the 30-30 with virtually no leading, but in the K31 after only 10 rounds I ended up with flakes coming out in the first cleaning patch. I was using a light load of Unique in both rifles. Any guesses why one leaded like crazy and the other didn't?

Leading is caused by many factors.  One might be the condition of the barrel.  Probably not in the case of a surplus rifle as it should have been shot enough to smooth out the barrel.  Another reason might be the 30-30 case is smaller than the 7.5 round and the pressure generated by the same charge of Unique failed to obturate the bullet enough in the larger Swiss case.  More powder equal more pressure.  Don't know where that charge lies with the Swiss round.  Look at 308 cast loads and adjust, you might have more luck.

I had 2 more grains in the K 31 then the 30-30, but  you might have a good idea there. I'll try increasing the load a bit at a time and see if I can seal it up.

Unfortunately there are no re-load specs for shooting cast lead in the K 31 so I am carefully winging it.

Thanks

I tried 170 grain flat nosed in my K31s and had feed trouble. I size down the Lee TL312-160-2R bullet and use approx 16 grains of Alliant 2400. It works pretty well for me.

I had to play with the bullet seating a little, but both rifles now feed perfectly all the time. I've run better then 800 cast rounds through the 30-30 since October with never a jam. With the K31 though, just moving the bullet a few thousands will effect accuracy so it takes a little patience to arrive at the right place for both easy feeding and good accuracy.

I think that Lee TL312-160-2R bullet might work well in the K 31, but it is pointed so I couldn't use it in the tubular magazine on the Winchester model 94.
