spotting scope idea-genius or stupidity?
« on: February 20, 2006, 03:03:35 PM »
Don't have a spotting scope.  Do have a 5-15 scope that lets me see .224 bullet holes that is on Weaver mounts.  What if I get a camera tripod, tripod adapter (found one), aluminum barstock and some extra Weaver bases (have some)  and juryrig it all together?  Would it work well enough?  I am sure that the Benelli types would frown but..........could do it for $20.

Well, remounting it is where the genius comes in:  I just screw the other Weaver bases in at the same spacing as the bases on my Remington.  I trade it back (with some minor POI change in theory).

I'm poor (and cheap), so sue me.

I have a cheapo 20-60x spotter for the far woodchucks.  I suppose a rifle scope on a tripod would work.

You can go pretty cheap on a spotting scope since you aren't aiming with it.  My uncle uses a set of german (WWII) binoculars mounted on a tripod for when we're calling 45-70 artillary on groundhogs.

creativity is always a welcome thing. I've wanted to try messing with color schemes of H&R/NEF stocks(not all that creative but still a fun idea)

Worked well enough for us back 20 some odd years ago but we weren't nearly that elaborate. Just taped down a Tasco scope and used it as our spotting scope. It was my friend Billy Doss' idea way back then. He liked to do things on the cheap when he could and had the scope laying around so he taped it to a cheap tripod he got somewhere and it sure worked well on his range for years.

The question:

"spotting scope idea-genius or stupidity?"

It seems by general agreement the answer is - not stupidity but rather genius, reborn!!!
Yes, it looks like a great idea!!!....<><....
