ML recoil ?
« on: February 24, 2006, 03:32:43 PM »
Haven't had a chance to shoot my new sidekick yet and quite honestly have never shot a muzzleloader before.

Just curious....how does the recoil from a ML compare to say a 12 ga. shotgun?
H&R Ultra Slug Hunter (12 ga.)
NEF SS Sidekick Muzzleloader (50 cal.)
Remington 870 Express (12 ga.)
Stevens 311-H SxS (20 ga.)
CZ 452 American (22lr)

Sort of depends on the powder type and amount and the bullet weight. In a Huntsman using Pyrodex 80gr. with a 295gr. bullet the recoil would be similar to a low brass 12 gage in a decent pump shotgun. Probably a little more comfortable than a break open shot gun since they are pretty light.  If you shoot 100gr. of something like Tripple Seven with a 300gr. or heavier bullet the recoil will be somewhat more severe. The recoil is usually a little softer since the muzzleloader powder usually is more of a push than a hard hit (with the exception of a fast burning powder like Tripple Seven).

I'm using 95grs T7 with 285gr spitfire and it kicks about like a 30-06.  :D

That would be about right. I found however that in my Omega (which has a couple of inches more barrel) I get higher velocity with Black Mag'3 and less perceived recoil than I get with Tripple Seven. Black Mag lights off more like real black powder and the pressure rise curve is less severe. The quick hit that Tripple Seven exibits does work to get high velocity from relatively short barrels. I have not compared the two powders in my Huntsman yet as I just got the rifle (traded an almost new Pursuit Lt with a scope for a less than new Huntsman with no scope - even trade and I think I got the best of the deal).
