Stocks progress (56k dialup beware)
« on: February 19, 2006, 08:12:50 AM »
Here are 3 pics of the stocks I got off of Quick in progress.   This is after the 5th or 6th coat of tung oil finish.

I pretty much followed Wlscott's instructions to the T.  I'm figuring another 6-8 more coats should have the grain 100% filled in.

I fitted the neck of the stock to be nearly flush with the receiver when its attached.  The forearm required a little trimming on the end to fit as well.

I ordered a Limbsaver "grind-to-fit" from the local shop/smith,  got a quote for $30 to fit it to my stock. ...which I'm inclined to do.

Sorry about picture angles,  I have them curing on coat hooks on a door.  They were still a little tacky when I took the pics.

I dont think I'll be changing my mind anytime soon..  ..sorry.     ..but if I do, you'll have first crack at them.

These are turning out alot better then I hoped considering I'm a total nOOb when it comes to this kind of woodwork.

TUNG OIL

I myself have gone up to 25 coats using tung oil I like the satin finish, just becarefull when it comes to cleaning solvents, tung oil is not like true oil.I did a Renegadfe stock last year and some of the solvents I used to clean the tang did leave a small streak on the wood .I think it was made by (BUTCH BORE CLEANER) :D

knight I believe that is one of the nicest gun stocks I have ever seen. Keep up the great work, I can't wait to see them on the rest of the gun.

Thanks guys!

I'm gonna take another inch off of it today at lunch here at the office with the 12" carbon/diamond disk cut-off wheel.  Not satisfied with the LOP(didn't realize those Limbsavers are that thick).

She really shines now at the 10th coat of tung oil.   The grain is 99% filled, only needing the steel wool to haze the surface and shave the few really small bubble blisters for the next coats.

After this is all done, I still have to pickup a scope.   None of the local shops carry much in the lines of varmint scopes being this is a big time whitetail area.  ..and I gotta clear off some of the credit card account before ordering online. lol    I really want the Mueller 8.5-25x44AO Tactical Mil-Dot .

I'm still debating on what to ream the .223Rem chamber out to..  Not a fan of rimless cartridges, but I have concidered the 223 Ack Imp.  Also the .220 Swift and .220 Swift Ack Imp..   I'm kinda faithful to the .225 Win, and the fact that I'll probably win another 100 new casings on eBay in the next day or two for dirt might seal the fate of .223 as to what it'll end up as.  But this time I think I'll be buying a reamer instead of renting one due to other projects.

...so I might have a finishing reamer to pass around here like the .357max and .445super did.

More pics..   going down to get my recoil pad tomorrow, and scope should be here next week.

The light patch is the wood..  not the finish..  actually more the flash from the camera..

Compared to my stock 45-70 Handi..
