That Time of Year
« on: November 10, 2006, 12:51:09 PM »
It's that time of the year again!  Gun season opens tomorrow morning in Central Florida, my stand is up and truck mostly loaded.  Bucks are for the taking and I've got an antlerless tag also.  I'm going to see if I can introduce either or both to 423 grains of putty soft lead encased in a paper jacket.  Will give a report if successful.

Castaway,
If you haven't used a soft PP on Deer before you will get an eye opener how well they will put a Deer down.
Good luck.

Lead Pot, I've hunt exclusively with a patched bullet for the past 6 or so years.  I'm a believer.  Only recovered two.  One in an Alabama doe that entered 1" to the right of due south and stuck under the off-side skin of the shoulder.  Last year I reocvered one from a 100 lb doe that somehow entered broadside, veered upwards and also stopped under the skin.  I call that one my armor plated deer.  How it didn't exit is still beyond me.

castaway,is it possible you nicked a branch on the way to the armored deer? Reason I ask ,I had a similar experience with a 30-30 and 180 grain bullets. My brother said he saw "some thing" before the bullet hit the deer. The entry wound was a profile or key hole .We found the slug deformed and in the on side rib cage. The heart and lungs and liver were damaged. When We told my grand pop about it he took us back and found a branch that was nearly sheared off between the shot and deer.I did hit it a few inches back, but never saw the branch.

No branches were in the way.  I was sitting in my box blind over a food plot, she was 100 yards away with nothing between us but rye grass.
