what barrel do i need?
« on: February 22, 2006, 02:48:24 PM »
I need some input about which barrels to get.  I am sending my frame to H&R to get a .308 sporter barrel.  I plan on using this for hunting white tail in the south east .  My only other barrel is a muzzle loader barrel.  So I will have the 308 for rifle season and the muzzle loader of muzzle loader season.   Then I was thinking since it would be there was there any other barrels I need?  I thought about 223 for smaller game, then I thought 357 would be fun for deer in brush.  Then I also thought about 44 mag just because.  But I really don’t need either of them.  308 will work better than 357 on deer and I have a AR if I really want to shoot 223 (although I would need to swap the EOTech for scope).  I have a nice sporterized SKS if I need a brush gun.  I live in the south east so 308 should have all the rang I need.  What do you think?  Is there another barrel I really need or should get just because it is a must have?  I mean while it is there I can get any of the hard to find barrels that never seam to appear on the used market.  Just tell me what you think.

rc51kid,
Seems as though you may have answered your own question.  You seem to have all your hunting needs covered.  So, go for it!  Just pick a barrel that you would like to have fun with.  Whether it be for the reloading and working up loads or for the shooting.  If you enjoy reloading, a 45-70 will give you lots of options for loads.  Some on this forum would say your collection is in-complete without one.  The other option, is to add a barrel that is not gonna be offered anymore, once the present stock is gone.  Such as an Ultra Comp 270 or 357Mag.  They do still have some 357 Mag barrels...Not sure on the Ultra Comp 270.  The Ultra Comp 3006 barrels went fast once people found out about them, but they may still have some 270 barrels.
Just my $.02.  Good Luck.  Have some fun.

Is the ML barrel the one that came on the frame , if so it may be a sb1 and you can not have a rifle barrel fitted to it .

You better check first , call H&R cost. service with the Ser. # and they can tell you .

Don't want you to waste the shipping cost for nothing .

I don't think you can go wrong with a 223 barrel. It's so cheap to shoot, it covers the plinking aspect very well. And having it in a single shot makes you really savor every shot :)

If they still have the 270 UltraComps in, I say definately pick one up while they are availible, give them a call to see if they are though. I personally don't plan on using my Comp anymore for hunting applications, due to it being so loud. But I am making a Target shooter out of mine. These barrels are a true joy to shoot, and recoil is non existant IMHO.

The 44Mag barrels are a ton of fun, but have had a track record for being a little fussy. I think the 357 would be a great option, being able to shoot 38's in it is a cool plus and from all reports are very quit to shoot.

Tons of great options. And as for the 45-70, If you reload it's a great choice. These have had a good reputation of being shooters too.
It's cool being able to build your own Handi Library of calibers, and do it all of 1 frame. 8)

If you have the right frame to start with..I would look at several different barrels...the 243 Bull barrels..the 26" 25-06 and the 26" 280..would be tops on my short list to get ...the 243 will work as both varmint and deer gun nicely...and is usually very accurate...a little heavy for sure..but it isn't too bad to carry all day long...the 25-06 is another multi-purpose cartridge...and is a excellent choice for long range shooting...the 280 will work for most situations as well..it isn't as well suited for varminting as the other 2 but will work for coyotes pretty good..and gives you the option for using much heavier bullets...it's one of the barrels I haven't had and most likely will be ordered sometime this year..I'm developing loads for my 25-06 right now..so I favour this barrel somewhat over the others..but that's just me for now.

For pure varminting..the 204,22Hornet,223,22-250 can't be beat..they are some very good choices..

The list of deer calibers is much longer...the 25-06.. 270.. 7-08..the 280..the 30-30..308..(opps your already getting oneof those  )..the 30-06..35 Whelen..the 45-70...all have their fans and are great cartridges all will work from short range to as far as you can shoot...and you can't forget the pistol cartridges of the 357 mag or the 44 mag either..

All of them can be very accurate..but you gotta deciede what your really wanting it for..then go for it..... :toast:

No matter that you have an AR, you cannot own too many .223's. I would
also buy a 25-06. No one should be without a big thumper, so I would add
a 45-70. For game that you would like 308 power but further, the 280 would be nice.

Hey rc51kid, make sure you tell them in writing that you want your trigger to stay the same as it is when sent. I have heard that they will reset the trigger to factory settings. You guys may want to correct me on this, bit I just wanted him to be on the safe side and keep his trigger the way it is.

That's been tried before, doesn't always work. If they think the trigger is too light, they'll "unlighten" it. Someone just recently got one back that was "fixed" or more appropriately, lawyerized. :x

That is the very reason I am hesitating on sending mine in for a .223 barrel. I have got my trigger down to about 2.5 pounds and I dont want anything messing that up.
