took my son out last weekend to see if we could not call in some filthy coyotes.He had been with me many times,But only to listen and learn,this time I let him bring a shotgun he won at the friends of the NRA banquet.It is a single shot 20ga.that will except 3" shells.pretty nice begginers gun.any way he has been to the shootin range with it and blasted lot of target loads down range,so I bought some 20ga,3"mags #3buckshot.
we got to our 1st spot and started callin.under two minutes this young dog comes runnin in and I stop him right in front of the boy child.the dog is not lookin our way.I tell him shoot him and slowly he brings the gun to bear on the dog,the dog catchs the movement and turns and looks right at him.the whole load of shot hit him in the head.down he went.I said hurry and put another round in and started callin.here comes a big ole dog I stop the dog in front of him and he is behind a bush I tell him wait.I can make him come closer and soon as he comes from behind the bush,Blast his a--,It seemd to take fer ever to get that ole dog to come from behind the bush.but he did,and the boy child lets loose.good hit but the dog bolted and ran.pop had to bring the H&K super 90 to bare on him for a finishing shot.as all this was happenin,another dog came runnin through the dance floor.the super 90 stoked with #4buck mags cut loose a volley of three shells which crumpled the dog.was a good day we had a photo session with the boy child and will have the photos enlarged and framed for him.we R headed out soon as I get off work this mornin and I am going to let him take his 7mm-08 that he got from me for passin hunter ed with such a good score this year.

Congratulations on having that man child turn into a great new hunting partner.

Please enjoy it while you can as eventually girl friends & college & more girl friends may take him away for a spell.
I have had this happen, was quite indignant when I found that I needed to take a gun along when before I was content to do the calling

Things are looking up though as I have a couple son-in-laws along with the occasional return of my son so now I have a better than even chance of passing this great sport on.

thanks, ya he is a man child now and my best bud.I am so happy he likes hunting and fire arms.we could not go in the mornin assome folks did not show up for duty and had to pull 24 hours OT.we will hit em a couple more times before the end of march.Just bought a custm kess arms in .270 weatherby.. has a B&L balvar #8 scope on board 2.5x8..waiting for some rl22 pwdr to come in and makes some loads and use one are two of them filthy coyotes for a test medium..

I'm not trying to be argumentative or start a fight, but I would like to ask you a question.

I noticed that you always refer to coyotes as "filthy coyotes". I've hunted coyotes/predators for many years and if anything, have delveloped a very healty respect for them. They're very smart, and to me, are the ultimate hunting challenge. Some of the dogs I have killed have the mange, in fact the last couple of years most do. But I would still not call them filthy.

I guess my question is, why do you call them filthy?

I call them filthy becuase I can.But I guess I have a reason for it.I have been hunting them for many years.I have shot more then you are most folks would believe if i told you.(the most I have shot in one day is 18,,the most I have had come in to the call is 20 plus)They are cannibals,did you know that?Have you ever seen them attack birthing animals(I guess we can call that nature)or eat a fawn alive?they are smart no doubt about that.I have respect for my elders the flag and the president of the united states.Not coyotes.I shoot them on site.I hope I have not offended you with this.
But, I love listening to them at night howling and chasin what ever dinner is around my house.and as hard as I have tried to bring thier numbers down.there is still many filthy coyotes out here to be called..happy coyote huntin to ya.

Like I said...I'm just trying to figure out why you call them filthy. No need to get defensive.

I have been involved with farming and ranching all my life. I have seen them start eating a calf while it's still halfway in it's mamma.

I love callin them, but I will and do shoot them on site like you. I don't get offended by much (especially on the internet), just have a curious nature I guess.

I still don't think they're filthy animals.

naw, I was not gettin defensive.just tryin ta answer yer question best I could.yea, bet you saw some neat stuff raised up on a ranch and farm.some good eaten things normally come from around those areas.I, like you, love callin predators,just so happens round here the filthy coyotes beat the other predators in.I don't shoot the foxes are the bob cats.at least not all the time..I think they are kinda cool.I just hate it when bears come chargin in.normally have to change the fruit of the looms shortly there after.Hey, I bet if we where huntin together and called in some filthy coyotes and killed a couple and I said Hey,why don't cha give one a hug anda kiss.youd say I ain't huggin are kissin no FILTHY COYOTE..he he he..
There does not seem to be many blogs on this site about hunting coyotes.mostly asking how to hunt em.I enjoy reading other folks callin experiances.how they did whether they scored or did not.I am tryin to post pics of coyotes that made it to the call.but havin no luck.will try harder.

First one was in West Texas with my Colt CR6724 rifle and a Hornady 55 grain V Max handload. We killed 35 that weekend.

Second one was weekend before last. Went home from Louisiana for some time off and did some calling. Shot was 200 yards with my new Bushmaster M4 Carbine and a 60 grain Hornady V Max Handload.

I thought I was doing ok but am going to have to step on it for any chance to get those kind of numbers.
Have had record temps with all of Jan daytime highs being above freezing. Unfortunately this makes for alot of mud, like 50lbs in 50 steps type of mud. :?

Those Pictures...did you have to deal with file to large, corrupt, or not supported errors even after resizing them?

Nope. Go to www.photobucket.com and set up a free account. It makes posting pics pretty much idiot proof. You'll just have to upload your pics to that website. Then when you want to post pics in a thread, you just click on the bottom address under the pic, copy and paste it in your thread.

You are a coyote killin fool.Great..those look to be some big dogs.what state did you take them in?I used to use the ARs,But I guess you have seen on the news about the trouble along the boarder here in the S.west.Well, it's not a new problem.Been that way for many apple seasons.So I decided a very long time ago to get another semi auto for predator hunting.something that looked a little less military.and looked more like a "hunting gun"so I found an H&K 630 in .223,and a friend of mine and I figured out a way to make M-16 mags fit the rifle (as they only have 10 round mags for it) using an M-1 garand clip epoxied to the back and a little dremmel work on it.I don't use em in the rifle but just have them with me when callin the boarder areas.Oh yea those muzzle breaks on the H&Ks work sweet.will try and post a couple pics this evening.

In the first pic, the four dogs were taken in Texas, near Seminole. The second was in the Oklahoma panhandle north of Hooker Oklahoma.

well,I got 4 pictures posted.In gbo general photo album..can not seem to get the photos to post in a thread here though.I think 18 dogs in one pile and 13 in the other.then my son with two bigs ones that came in together.I waited till they were almost in his lap.and nailed em.he loved it.they were big ole mt.coyotes then the other on the jeep was a flat land dog.there is a two gun match in the mornin.but the weather is changin tonight and going to be cold and wet..that will get thier motors going.I will let my son choose what we do.

went out yesterday,made 4 sets and the wind was blowing.tried into the wind, down wind and cross wind.no luck atall.did not even here any howlin back.But we did find two UXOs.spent an hour flagging them.
it is so dry and dusty.guess those filthy coyotes did not want to get up in that wind and have all that dust go up thier sniffers.it dizzled all night and still is right now and looks like it may keep it up..in the mornin if all works out my son and I will head out again.happy coyote huntin to ya..

any one thats interested I put 5 more photos in the members gallery..the dogs on the back of my truck came in side by side from a half mile out they were racing each other.hit one and soon as the other turned to escape.wack.was a real good day.the sign, some one with computer magic stuck me there..he he he..

well,found out last night the boy child left his knife out in the field.so we will hit several areas this am soon as I get home.then go look for his Ken Onion this afternoon.will be in a shot gun area only today..that will work for me. :shock:

You guys are just going to have to come to the predator hunting museum and see some pictures of of what alot of coyotes looks like lol.

Pictures are worth a thousand words and I have a few. Some are from back in my contest days 70s, 80s and 90s in Arizona, Mexico, Nevada and California, my best hunt back then was 37 and yes I won lol.

Let me say I've seen as many as 45 coyotes checked in on a competition hunt years ago and they were all honest.

I have a few pictures from New Mexico when Dusty Wood ( the 2003 Worlds Coyote Calling Champion ) hunted with me, nothing great maybe 12 to 17 coyotes.

I also have a picture of a couple hundred dead coyotes that were killed on a weekend of hard hunting, I'm sure you'll want to see that one lol.

we went out monday and made five sets.brought in three dogs,educated all three of them.My son and his shotgun..am going to have to get him a filthy coyote killin machine.
One set we were on ,he was sitting to my leaft.afet calling I saw a rabbit come blazin up a path towards me.I told Hunter that rabbit is running away from Mr.coyote and he should be here any minute BE READY...well 3 minutes later Mr. coyote come walkin up the trail sniffin the tracks of mr.Bunny.On Hunters shotgun you have to cock the hammer.well he looked down to see where the hammer was to cock it..and the coyote saw his movement and was GTR,if he would have waited 10 sec more the coyote would have been in a big clearing and we both would have had a shot at him.another one came blazin in and I was on him..he was crusin through the mesquite dunes as I was swinging the yote went behind a dune when the gun went off. 41 pellets into the sand dune.he he he...as we were gettin done with one set we got up and I saw a yote that was standin behind a bush wantin to come in..but he saw us and started barkin..I had my custom .17 remington.and thought I might be able to shoot through the bush and nail the filthy little coyote.I saw him clear as a bell in the scope.but to much bush the bullet exploded on a branch and the little bugger ran off.so off we went...humbled by the filthy coyotes again..but we did find his knife..

went out yesreday by myself..the boy child was hurling chunks from some stomach virus.made about seven sets.the 1st set I brought in a very wary dog he stopped in a fire break as he was circleing to catch a sent.I guess I could have shot him are at least at him.he was bout 200 plus yards out.I decided I wanted to watch him and see what he did.wheen he stepped out of the fire break and back in to the bushes.I never saw him again..and I played some real good dinner bells for him.so I left.made a couple more sets and all they did was bark.two groups were coming and when they both started barking they stopped and that was it.guess they did not want to fight and thier bellys were full of oryx leavins.then I went to this real nice earthen hill.kinda high that over looked these real nice grassy areas.and called.there was almost nothing for 200 yards in front of me but sand.and the e-caller which I was using with the remote.I saw a yote step out of a bush bout 400 yards out and was working him in.and out of the corner of my eye I spy a coyote bout 20 yards from the caller lookin at it and wonder why it makin all that racket and noit smellin are movin like dinner.I slowly put the custom remington 600 in .17 remington to my shoulder and the leupold was on 4.5 pwrn the dog looked good but not a good shot. so I barked and got it attention it looked up at me and the duplex cross hairs layed on the front of his chest and the trigger finger tightend around the trigger and BAM,hit that filthy coyote right square in the middle of it's chest.you could see the whole animal viberate from that little bullet dumpin all it's energy in it.those .17 don't recoil much and you can see the hits.I called for 10 more minutes.and left to make two more sets and shoot one more big boy that came in at 14 minutes circlin me and stopped on a dune 300 plus yards.I shot throught the shoulder at a quarterin animal.through the scope I saw a big puff of white dust come off him and fur flew up and on it's back with the rear feet in the air.
then I headed off to the predator musem in carrizozo N.M...met onecoyote and saw the coyote coffin.what a treat.

I see you shoot a remington 700-17-rem also. Know what you mean when you say they sound like a bowl of jelly when you popem in the body, First coyote i shot with mine he dropped behind a little bush and at first i thought i had missed him so i decided to have a look and there he layed flatter than a flitter and i picked him up by the rear leg and shook him and it sounded like a sack of jelly. Hope to run into you one of these days some place where we can sit down and have a cup of coffee or some thing.

The coffee will be on me.I go all over the state hunting coyotes and mostly lookin at the scenery.I just love taken my jeep to places most folks don't get to go.and It is shed huntin time right now.
when I head that way I will get in touch before I go.Looking forward to it.
Just thinking.my son did not get to go last weekend.and is beggin for one more field trip before I shut down for the season.I believe he and I will have at it one more time if weather permittin..he wants to shoot one with his new 7mm-08 sooooo bad...we shall see.and details of the hunt will follow if we make it..

well my son and I got off to a late start..I did not really want to go.but he did..the wind was blowin.and it was already pushing high 60s on the ole temp gauge.we went way up into the mts.where I know no one has been in a very long time.and called the rolling hills on the mts.great lookin places for those filthy coyotes to be hiding.but with the wind galeing and who knows..we did not see nor hear a coyote in 6 sets.the boy child said.well pop.maybe next winter.I said you betcha..we were back at the shack at 2pm..made some killer martinis and grilled some 2"porter house steaks on the grill with mesquite..fell a sleep on the bed with my little girl.what a great day..that is it untill next oct.time to clean and service all the gear and store it till then...soooo where is a good free place to go shoot PDs???
