I have a .357 ruger gp 100,I put a bushnell red dot holosight on it.My question is this the right set-up to hunt whitetail, and if it is what size of load should I use.

It'll work just fine up to around 50-60 yards or so with the right load.

Load up some 158g Reminton SP's(bulk/Midway), with Lil' Gun, and magnum primers. I get 1400 fps at the muzzle out of my 5.5" Blackhawk with this combo.

Use the best bullet construction and heaviest bullet out to 50 to 60 yards.  :D

you put an ugly ol holo sight on top of a nice sleek handgun. So did I, on top of a rb 44 mag and i love it. let us know what type of groups you get. i feel comfortable with the 44 out to 100 yrd with the right ammo. I take a lot of crap from the guys i shoot with about the holo sight. these purest use irion sights but they usually shut up after I knock down bowling pins at 100 yrd
Have fun burning powder getting it sighted.

I used the 180 grain Nosler Partition from my 6" S&W 686 during several deer seasons. I had a 4x Leupold EER scope on top but I found it to be a little too much scope unless I had a firm rest. Performance out to 100 yards was great with thru and thru on chest shots with tissue expulsion.

I had good luck with Winchester 158 Grain JHP. I took three deer with this Taurus and really liked the whole Handgun hunting experience. I would not try anything lighter and would recomend you try JSP instead. They will do the job if you do yours.

If you like walking up on deer in the heavy grass this is a great hunting rig.
