Which of these would be the best choice for hunting in thickets?

if your still hunting, the 45-70 wins hands down. the ultra weighs about 9 lbs hand down. i would probaly pick he 45-70 for both stand hunting and still hunting, if rifles are leagal. so many more loads and less recoil. if shotguns are the only choice, the ush is the best choice out of any sluggun on the market
I've got to many but never enough!!!!

The slug guns are effective no doubt but a 45/70 is about the most fun you can have fully clothed.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

I'm with Stan.  I shot my new .45-70 for the first time last weekend and it was a blast!

Depends on how thick the thickets are :)  :)  :)

This would be a hard choice for me..I luv them both..and my 45-70 weighed 9.5lbs...so did my 12ga Ultra Slug Hunter...hunting strickly in super thick stuff..I'd go with the 12ga..if choosing between a 12ga and 20 ga..make mine a 12ga everytime..if choosing between a 20ga Ultra and a 45-70 Ultra..the 45-70 handsdown..The 45-70 is a very awsome cartridge  even shooting my 2400fps 300 grain Nosler Partition load..but..the most damage I have ever seen first hand to a deer was what a 12ga Hybrid slug did to my 175lb field dressed buck at 83yards...the hole coming out was huge...really huge...and with Hornady's new BT slug..200 yard shots are a real possibility now..pricey...that's for sure..but you can load up cast slugs in wads to plink with ifin your wanting to do that..Anyother type hunting..the 45-70 wins the day..like I said..tuff choice..

I'm surprised no one suggested the Tracker II barrel. A lot lighter than the USH, and from all reports, just about as accurate.
Less expensive too.

Buy both..  then you'll never be left wondering..

I have the Handi 45-70 and the BC 45-70..     The Handi's prime duty is pine thicket hunting.  Which it does very well.  The slug gun will give the Handi a run for its money, giving only accuracy at longer ranges to the 45-70.  I honestly think you really cant go wrong with either, having the 45-70 a better bullet/load selection.

I plan on getting H&R's 24" rifled heavy slug gun some day.   Looking at the muzzle is like looking at the main turret guns of the USS New Jersey.

In the aerial picture below, the red  X's mark my general stalking grounds on the family farm and neighboring farm lands.

The 2 X's on the left are in a thicket so dense that you can only see 20-75ft depending on if you are looking against the rows of trees or with them.   You have to crouch down to walk in most of it.

Blue X marks where my dad and uncle sit as I drive deer out of the thicket.  ..they're just too old to be driving deer.

True and being a bit heavier would soak up more recoil.
Still if I were going for this kind of stalking in thick cover, I would want a lighter rifle. Having open sights can be a blessing in tight areas, just as both the 22" 45-70 and 24" Tracker barrels have.
I agree with knight-if in doubt..get both  If you aren't satisfied with either, you can always trade it off for something different here.
