Hi there. Justin here. 23 and from East Texas. Just got a handi rifle special ordered from Wal-Mart. I've never hunted hogs/wild pigs but I am just starting because my familys land has become "infested" with these beasts. I was wanting a 45-70 but they people wal-mart called said they were out of stock, so I asked if they had they .308 and they did so I went with that. I know about ballistics but does anyone think this is good for hogs? I grabbed some Remington Core Lokt 180grs while I was there. Did I make a decent choice if I am going to hunt hogs?
Glad to be a new member here. Looks like a lot of good people here from what I have read. Thanks, Justin

Welcome aboard!!
I've not hunted hogs, but have been lookin at and hoping to get down in Oregon for some feral hogs for a long time. That said, I've read just about as much as I can absorb on the subject and the .308 should do real well with good bullets and proper shot placement. I've hunted with a .308 for the last 20 years and then some, it's a great choice, specially with premium bullets. Check out the links below, there's some good stuff there if you haven't already seen that web site.

Welcome  :D
congrats on your .308. I don't hunt hogs either, but I have read where guys have taken them with a .243 so I think the 308 would work great.

Welcome to the forum easttexashunter!

Assuming you don't get a "lemon", which can happen from any manufacturer, your 308 is plenty good medicine for hogs.

The good news is that even if you do get a lemon NEF will make it right.

Welcome to the forum Justin, it's always good to have another shooter with us.
I believe you made a good choice with the 308. It's one of the best cartridges ever developed in my book, and is very versitle too. While the 30-06 may shoot the heavier stuff a little better, that doesn't mean the 308 won't sling high grains out there.
Which version of the 308 did you buy, the Ultra model or the Survivor model with the 22" Bull Barrel?

If you don't mind me being nosy, Justin, how much did you pay for your new Handirifle? Was that with, or without a scope? If it was without, what kind of scope did you put on it?

Welcome  :D , Justin the 308 will dust any hog out there. You will will want to use a well constructed bullet on the big bores. I use 150 gr win failsafes in my 308. I'm in Louisiana now but grew up in E TEX. near Jasper. Where are you living?

Hi Justin,
Welcome to the forum, the 308 is a great alrounder, and I'm sure will do the business on the Hogs, any of the premium 150-180gr rounds will do the job, perhaps the 165gr will be the best comprimise of velocity and knockdown. The best plan is try different brands through the Handi for acuracy, as a well placed bullet is as important as a well made bullet,
Regards Howard.
ps what weight are the Hogs in your patch, here in New Zealand 200lbs is a big one, the tusks length is also imprtant to bragging rights.

I live in Murchison, Texas. Between Athens and Tyler. The hogs I hunt range anywhere from 50-450 pounds. Anywhere they go they just destroy the land. The one I had wal mart order is just the regular handi rifle. I was going for the 45-70 but they were out of stock and i asked if they had any .308 and they did so i got that. I'm not sure what kinda scope I'm going to put on it. Does the standard .308 handi come with iron sights, i dont think it does but im not 100% sure. And do they come with the scope mounts. Thanks for all of the replies guys. I appreciate it. Justin

Justin, it will come with a scope base, but not rings and no sights.

The .308 should work well...   When I lived in Tampa, FL I used to use a Winchester model 94 30-30 on piggies.  Never a problem taking one..

I put alot of pork, bacon and ribs in my mom's freezer with it.

I have used a 22-250 and a .270 to shoot wild hogs out of palo duro canyons.  Your .308 will work well.  Some guys i know are now using shotguns with 00buck to run them down and shoot them.  The land owners are doing all they can to keep the hogs from ruining their land.  Good luck with the new gun, I bet you fall in love with it.
