What scope for a .375 H&H
« on: February 03, 2006, 02:19:48 AM »
Question for you all - What scope would you use on this rifle? I was going to put a 1.5x - 5x on it but after talking with a couple of guys that have gone to Africa and used thier .375 as thier all around rifle both of them said that they wished that they had more magnification for use on plains game. Would a 3x - 9x Zeiss be too much? or should I stick with the lower power scope. Opinions? Experiences? Thanks! CEJ...

I have a 2.5-8varXIII and have never had a desire for anything other then this. It's just about the perfect match for the cartridge capability.

.375 H&H Magnum Scope
« Reply #4 on: February 03, 2006, 12:23:03 PM »
I used a Leupold 3 - 9X on my South Africa trip for my .375 H&H Mag. and it worked well.  I had it set on 9X the whole time.  On the one 200 yard shot I took, I was glad for the magnification and it wasn't too much magnification for the 80 to 100 yard shots.  I was after plains game and not dangerous game.  If I had be hunting dangerous game, I probably would have preferred something with a little less magnification.

The one thing you want to be sure to have is enough eye relief.  My scope is on an Encore and if I'm not careful, I get dinged in the forehead.  A muzzel brake would solve this problem but I prefer no muzzel brake.

I'll make a wild guess that you hunted the eastern cape of RSA or Namibia if you usd that on 9X the whole time.

At 9X in Zim, Zam, Bot, or the NP and KZN of RSA all you would see is bush at 9 power.

Remember that Leupold scopes are marked for power very much like the engine size ratings of a motorcycle or ATV. They are rounded off to the nearest marketing level magnification.

I think my 2.5-8 power scope is more like 2.1- 7.6  However the OBJ size is always exact.

I hunted in RSA last year with a CZ375 with JJHack.  I have a Leupold 1.75 X 6 on my rifle which worked fine but I think I will swap scopes off another rifle and put on a 2.5 X 8.  The little extra bit of magnification on the high end helps me with the long range stuff.   It also may have just a little extra light gathering ability.

If you look further down this pile of posts you might find a warthog calling video clip I put up some time ago.

If it's still here you will see an example of some of the finest shooting I have experienced in a long career of taking hunters afield. Two high pressure running shots on a warthog through brush at 75-125 yards away and hauling "pork". This fella RAC was the shooter. I would take this guy hunting anytime and not even need to carry a backup rifle!

OH yeah and for the record............his bride is no slouch behind the trigger either!
