Needs Help identifying a rifle
« on: March 17, 2003, 10:40:31 AM »
Fellas:  I need help identifying a black powder cartridge rifle owned by a friend.  I believe the best is a Vettrelli (?), but am not certain.  It has one of those long barrels, probably about 30 inches or so, and it is a bolt action rifle.

The bolt is a straight bolt - 90 degree straight handle, and the handle is split lengthwise, by design.

The beast carries a box magazine that is not detachable.

The bore looks smaller than 45 caliber.

Someone told this fella it was a 45-70 caliber but to be honest, the bore looks too small and the magazine does not look like it would handle a cartridge as long as the 45-70.

Can anyone out there give me any indication of what this might be and what caliber it might be chambered in.  Thanks for your help.

BTW, the beast looks to be in pretty good shape.  Bluing is intact, stock is very nice, bore is still dirty, but the numbers are mismatched.  Thanks again.  Mikey.

The rifle is Swiss and is 10.4 mm rim fire.  Not a 45-70 cal.

I seem to recall that many were rim fires.  Check the bolt, firing pin for the rim fire was dual set ar 12 o'clock and 65 o'clock.

Split bolt, perhaps a Beaumont?
In any event Keith Doyon's site is a delight, and will likely get you there.
