10MM For Bear?
« on: September 18, 2003, 04:37:20 PM »
Hello from Idaho! I seen on the news that a lady in MN was attacked by a
black bear.

Bears are a concern for me, as are cougars.

Any of you use a 10MM on black bear?  What loads?

More than likely you will never have to defensively use a pistol on a black bear. If your 10mm ever had to see black bear action I would use the 200gt flat point.  I'd rather have a hot 10mm in a semi than a hand cannon revolver for defense (note, I didn't say hunting)  15 rds of 10mm is some serious handgun power.

The only problem with defending yourself against a bear is you are only going to have a few seconds, five maybe, to get into action and get the job done.  Fifteen shots are not going to do you any good as you will never have the time to shoot more the two maybe three shots.  Better to take a second and make sure where you are putting the bullet.  If you are going to carry a semi-auto then by all means carry a .45 ACP.  Personally I carry a 4" .44 magnum for protection when I HAVE TO.  When in bear country, I live in bear country, if I'm going for a walk to just smell the flowers or look at the birds then I carry a rifle.  Some people like to carry shotguns, if you are one then make sure it's full of Brenneke slugs loads.  Forget buckshot!  Even 000 buck isn't a good choice for stopping a big dangerous animal like a bear.  Lawdog

a friend ran off an angry sow with his 22 revolver, and caught it all on video tape.   didnt try to hit her; just hoped that the "bang!" would bring her to her senses.   it did.  your brain is your best defense; but any gun beats your fingernails.

myronman3,

Question!  Was this sow in full charge or just stomping around angry?  The facts show that most of the time when a Black Bear charges you it's either you or the bear.  One or the other is going to end up dead.  When a Brown Bear attacks you it may knock you down and work you over then leave but a Black Bear gets you down, the percentages show they don't leave until you are dead.  We have scared off Black Bears when they were acting big and tough around our camps with pots and pans by beating them together.  All the time we were beating the pots together one or more of us would be keeping the bear covered with a rifle just in case they didn't scare.  Personally I believe your friend was very, very lucky.  I wouldn't bet on that happening again.  Lawdog
