.45 Colt crimp

Either crimp is acceptable, but for that big .45 Colt case, a bit more uniform ignition is had by crimping into the crimping groove.  Light powder charges are recommended, as "magnumizing" of this weight bullet can result in instability and terrible accuracy.

Concur with John. I shoot a large amount (have 6 cavity mould) of 190/200 gr SWCs in the .45 Colt including having used the Lyman 452460.  I don't roll crimp at all but just straighten out the case mouth. Bullets are seated so case mouth covers 1/2 of front driving band. I use either bullet over 7.5 gr Bullseye for use in a Uberti revolver and a Rossi M92 rifle. Velocity is 930 fps in the 5 1/2" revolver and 1210 fps in the 24" M92. Accuracy is excellent.  As John said much above those velocities and accuracy goes south.

A lighter revolver only load is 6.5 gr of Bullseye for 837 fps in the Uberti. That load does not obturate the cases to seal the chamber in the M92 and I get gas blow back into the face. It is a great load in the revolver though.

200gr 45Colt load

Found the time to work on a load for my Ruger 45 with 200gr SWC. With a BHN 10,.452 and 6.9grs Green Dot and a OAL of 1.527'. I used a Lee factory crimp die to put a light crimp over bullet shoulder. Book says 936fps and 10,600CUP. There was no gas blowback with this load. Will post groups and such later.. Have a great day{ Sunny daya ahead]

I shoot quite a few of the 452460 in my .45 Colts. I sink them just below the front driving band and roll crimp. My best accuracy came after starting to load this way. 8-11 gr Unique  has been very acurate and recoil the wife can handle. My EAA Colt clone in .45 Colt shoots very small groups with this bullet over 10 gr Unique. I have some Red dot and Bulls eye loads to that are more economical and a blast to shoot.  Jay
