I have replaced the rear sight on my BC with the Smith sight. Using a laser bore sighter, I had to drift the rear sight all the way to the right edge of the base, and drift the front sight to the extreme left of the dovetail in the barrel in order to get things lined up properly.

This should not be! Assuming the bore is centered in the barrel, why do I have to move the sights so much to sight it in?

Is this a common problem? If not, will H&R "fix" it under warranty?

I'd have to hazard a guess that there is something out of kilter with the installation of the rear sight and you are forced to compensate by moving both.

Here's food for thought! I bought a hornet barrel that I had fitted to my frame. When I took it to the range...I couldn't get it on the paper! I finally had the Williams site hanging out of the dovetail to the left, trying to pull it over. I brought the barrel into the kitchen and tried to rest it square on the lug. When I really sighted down the barrel I noticed that the front bead was canted to the left. Now I dont know whether it was 2 degress, 3 or what but I could definately see it! I sent the barrel back to NEF after speaking with John and they gave me a new barrel with the front sight VERTICAL the way it should be! Check your front sight out! You may have a similar affliction! --hope it helps

It sounds to me like the bore is off center of the axis of the barrel on one end, or the front sight dovetail has been cut off center, the latter being most likely. If the rear sight mount holes are off center, it would be pretty obvious when you put the ladder up.

SB, just to work through this in order, did the gun shoot straight with the factory sights? If that was working OK, and you only had to drift the front over after installing the Smith, I would look for the problem with the Smith sight or installation.

I'm probably the "youngest" guy at Ione that shot at the original Folsom range.

One more possibilty, maybe the lazer bore sighter is damaged or used improperly. :? You're the first to mention the problem, I have 2 BCs, they're as close to perfect as I can see.

I am a patient guy, which means I had already bought the Smith ladder sight before I even got the rifle, and mounted it before shooting it the first time. And when I did shoot it, it was on paper, but way off to the left.

Then I had a stroke of genius! Why don't I use the laser bore sighter that I already own, and which works perfectly!

And the red dot was way left of the point of aim. Just about exactly the same distance off as the holes on my target. Hey, I'll just drift my sights.

OK, after drifting the Smith sight as far to the right as possible without it actually extending out of the base, that darn red dot was still left of the POA. OK (again,) I'll drift the front sight to the left. By the time I got the red dot to match POA, the front sight was hanging out to the left about a quarter inch! (Or thereabouts.)

Not good.

OK, (again and again,) I put the Williams sight back on, not changing the windage that it was originally set to, and recentered the front sight, right to where it originally was set as well.

Guess what? That damn red dot was STILL to the left of POA! Great! At least that means the Smith sight is probably just fine. At least Smith and Williams agree.

So, I'll call NEF tomorrow and see what they say. Something's not straight, and I don't mean me!
