700 rebarrel to 284 win
« on: January 16, 2010, 08:13:17 AM »
hello all i am wanting to rebarrel a remington 700 to 284 win looking for a little help on the project what length barrel would be best, what twist should i use? im thinking an action from either a 22-250,243 or a 308 would be best since the rim is the same.what tools would i need i already have a barrel vise and action wrench from brownells i think i need a go nogo gauge. would i also need a reamer ?

:D James, I am NOT a gunsmith, but I would advise you to get the action and barrel you desire , and have a qualified gunsmith install it for you... It requires lathe work to do a good job...as far as a 284 in a 700, I looked into it once I believe and the bdl may be you best choice as the .284 case is larger than the 308..somework may have to be done on the rails..I just had a 7mm-08 put on a .22-250 action...it is an adl..the first round doesn't always feed quite right..there is some adjustment needed here...I like a 1-10 twist for my 7mm's a bit slower than most factory...on this 7mm-08, I used a Douglas #5 and had it cut to 23 inches...it is a fairly heavy barrel, with the short length it holds well and shoots wonderful....Haven't tried many loads but so far the groups with 100's, 139's and 160's are excellent......

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a .284 require a long action receiver? The .243 /.22-250/.308 are short actions.

The 284 is the same overall length as 308. The 284 has the same case capacity as a 30-06 but in a short action length the case is fatter than the rim. Im not sure why i want one but i do i already have some ammo and some dies to reload for it.

I would put it in a regular '06 length action; giving you the ability to seat heavy bullets out of the powder space. A 1:9 or 1:10 twist for the heavy weights.
But you would give up the slight "advantage" of a short action if that was one of your objectives

Everyone who thinks there problems getting the 284 case to feed should read how it's done.

I got a Ruger 77 that was chambered in 7mm-08 redone for a .284 Win. No change in barrel etc. The rail(s) had to be modified to handle the fatter case, nothing otherwise.
BTW it is one of the most accurate rifles I have.

The Win factory load with 150 gr WW bullets can be duplicated with W-760 powder.

Most use a 24" 1-9 twist. Mine is on a Mauser action with a 26" 1-9 twist. If you are shooting 140's and lighter most of the time the short action works great, as this was designed as a short action .

The 700 rifle uses a stamped box with lips to feed from so no rails persay to open. The 284 looses a lot if heavy bullets are used in a rifle built on a short action. If going to a long action the 280 Rem would be a better choice. It would also allow more capacity if converted to a 280 AckleyImp.. The 284 is really at it's best in a short action with lighter (140 grains) bullets as a light weight sporter.. If heavier bullets are contemplated perhaps a different cartridge would be better.. The rebated rim makes feeding from most bolt guns more difficult of course a box magazine would eliminate the consideration..

For the Rem short action Wyatt makes a extend magazine box "that has extra long feed lips give the reliable feeding for the 284 case."  thats a quote from Brownells.  Wyatt also makes magazine boxes for the WSM using Rem action they also make some for Win action.

If I was going to build something on a Rem short action in 284 wanting OAL 3.00" I sure use a Wyatt.  The article I posted from 6BR about that 284  "The bottom metal is manufactured by Badger Ordnance and utilizes a 5-shot Accuracy International (AI) magazine with a maximum Cartridge Overall Length (COAL) of 2.90"."   All the Barger magazine are made for Rem short/long action only same with the ones from H&S.

We have one gunsmith in town who builds a sheep rifle model using the 284 on rem short action and he modified the feed lips some way for the 284 case also extend the port foward alittle.  If anyone seen one of Mel Forbes short action pretty much looks like a Rem and they manages to use 3.00" for the 284 case and get it to feed in ADL magazine.

I have alot build on Rem actions one reason is the after market parts and if you look at alot of cutom actions there clone of the 700 most may have a trigger but that it you have to buy the bottom metal.

With the advent of the 6.5-284 in long range competition the magazine situation is alot better than  it was a few years back. The Mauser took a little work, but I am sure most modern guns have the parts you can get to make them work without much effort. Roper gave you some good advice on where to buy. Enjoy the .284, one of the early "short Mag's".  FYI I would estimate you would loose 150 fps from 22-26", but 24" would be a decent length to get most of the velocity out of it.

I dont believe i would go with bullets heavier than 150 for me it would be something else to deer hunt with. I have been looking at barrels ive found one from brownells in the catalog it says 7mm08 in wondering if that is stamped on the barrel as i dont want to have the barrel marked for something different. also i was just wondering if the barrel could be put on upside down if it did so it would be hidden under the wood. Ive been looking for barrels that are already prethreaded for the 700 action.

also i was just wondering if the barrel could be put on upside down if it did so it would be hidden under the wood.

That can be done by cutting a very small amount off the breech side of the barrel, rethread, and using a reamer to re-cut the chamber.

To restamp the caliber designation simply file a little flat where the old designation was a stamp the designation in the flat. It makes stamping easier and removes the old stamp.
