Ruger Quality Control?? (updated)
« on: February 12, 2006, 02:29:17 AM »
Anyone had a problem with Ruger repair quality control.
I sent my Blackhawk to them back in December to get the front site fixed as it was installed crooked at the factory, way off center, so bad that even adjusting the site either way all the way over, I could never get a straight shot on target.
I got the gun back last week, and the  new site had been put on worse than the old. Way off to the right. There must be no one there checking quality of repair. At 50.00 per shipping back to the plant, this is getting old, but off it will go again next week. Great looking gun, poor service.

I have never had a problem with them.  I always call ahead to confirm costs, when and where to ship, etc.  Then I  call when the gun gets there, call on the date when it is supposed to be done, etc.  I keep in touch with them during the whole process.  They end up knowing me well.  They don't want to go thru this again, so they do a good job.  If you are polite, let them know you appreciate them, thank them personally for doing a good job, they will return the favor.

My 1974-vintage BH purchased new had an excessive clyinder gap of over 0.015".  Spit lead like nobody's business, but was 'okay' with jacketed reloads.  Fine, I liked jacketed reloads.   After 10 years of heavy use I sent it back for a re-blue and to tighten up the gap.   Got it back with a nice blue job and new grip frame, and a nice pinched barrel.  You can feel the restriction with a tight patch, about 1.5" long.  Idiot with a barrel vice tightened it up too much when he removed the barrel.   I still can't shoot cast bullets because it will lead the barrel something fierce.  Sh**ty QC in the Ruger repair department....

I faxed a letter to the service director and to Bill Ruger, Jr.

I recieved a call yesterday from a guy named Mike at service. He is sending me a prepaid shipping label to send the gun back. and will ensure that the work is overseen buy a "supervisor" and inspected before it gets sent back to me.

I had the exact same issue with my front sight on my NM Black Hawk.

I called Ruger and they said to send it in.  My Smith sent it in for me and I had it back in two weeks as good as new - better, actually.

I didn't pay a dime and my Black Hawk shoots like a dream now.

I thought I'd post my experience since usually we only hear the negative things.  Ruger really took care of me.  I hope they set you up this time.  Good luck.

The head of Rugers repair shop is/was Mike Smisco. Dang good guy, too bad he just retired in the past couple weeks.  What this will do to their QC is cause for concern.  Mike would pay shipping to Ruger, even on an older gun if it was a factory caused issue.

I recieved the shipping label last week and so I shipped the gun back to Ruger a week ago today. Today, the Fed-Ex man brought the gun back to me. 1 week!!        The sight is now perfect. I am impressed and grateful for the service,  but that should be the modus operendi instead of the exception.

Awesome news.  I'm glad they took care of you the way they took care of me.

I have a question for you now.  When I got mine back, the repair notes said that they had replaced or repaired the pawl (I can't remember which and can't find my slip at the moment).  Did they do that to yours as well?  I had never mentioned it to them.  They just did it.  My Smith said that more often than not, they see Ruger do that on the revolvers that they work on.

Now get out and shoot that thing!
