I just learned that there is an aftermarket smokeless Ml barrel that lists a 50 cal. bore with a 1 in 36 twist and a 28 in. barrel and H&R lists the Huntsman as a 50 cal. with a 1 in 28 twist with a 24 in. barrel .

So were are they getting their barrel blanks , i do not know of a way of changing the twist rate with out re-boreing a barrel , so how do they do it .

And if they can get barrel blanks with out fitting to a frame why can't we get barrel blanks for centerfire calibers . or at least get barrels from the factory with out having to send in a frame .

I relise that the ML is a sealed breach but still the barrel fit needs to work on the frame . Other wise how can you get them to shoot with any accuratecy .  :?  :?  :?

I think they get their barrels from Green Mountain..  I'm sure GM makes a batch to order as requested.


NEF/H&R welds on the lugs after they receive the barrels, then fits the units to the receivers.


or at least thats how I gather...

Almost any good machine shop can make up blank barrels.  So there is almost an unlimited source of blanks, someone just has to order them.  It's just the cost is so high that orders are not made till there is several hundred needed, so the cost will come down to a reasonable amount.

Stimpylu32,

They are Douglas Barrel button rifled barrel blanks. The standard barrel they make is 28" 1-36 twist, but if they get enough orders for another twist you can get it in about any twist. I know of a guy that has a .45 caliber barrel fitted to a Ruger No. 1 that is a real beauty. Click the link and you can get the info on the barrels.

I'm starting to understand a little but am still con-fuzzled on just how they get the final product .

If i have a hundred blank barrels and need lugs welded on , i still do not see H&R welding them so i could sell my barrels and take away profits from H&R .

And the fitting thing still has me confused too , how can another company have a barrel that fits the frame without factory fitting but H&R can not . i would not want a barrel that flopped around even if it was a sealed ML barrel .

We all know that even with a factory fit some of H&Rs barrels do flop quite badly .

Or am i missing the big picture here . still confused  :?  :?  :?  :?  :?

I would guess tolerances or consistant process would have something to do with sending frames into the factory to be fitted. I know many here have indicated  that it would be nice if we did not have to send our frames into be fitted. Its just on the wish list now, but maby someday they will change it.

numrich gun parts had some barrels that were barrel blanks 1 3/16 dia for 26?????inchs long a few years ago. ,<8 yrs .>in 30  cal 357 and 44 cal.that were suppese to be h&r barrels but never got turned......i got one in each cal had turned down and lugs <off cheap shotgun barrel>welded to the barrels and chamberd.....had a 762 39....308 bore<<<<reloaded 308 bullets in 762 x39 brass>>>>>>357 max...and a 445 super mag.......im propaby the only one here with a bull barrel 357 max :) ...................the older shotgun and rifle barrel lugs were soldered on,so they were easily removed without damageing the lug...could be soldered on or welded to another barrel easy....most people on this board can fit most barrels to ther own actions,so a good smith can do it easy........my only problem is my good smith passed away :twisted:  :twisted: ...........hope this helps jb
