Anyone shooting a 270 Win?
« on: December 04, 2005, 06:07:20 PM »
Well I messed up today!  I took 3 of my Contender barrels to the gun show, hoping to sell the ones that I didn't use very often.  But instead of selling them, I traded for a Encore with a  15",270 Win barrel.  I've never owned a 270, so I'm looking for a good deer load for the pistol.  Also, I wanted any opinions on factory ammo.  I have brass and dies ordered, but will probably shoot a box or two of factory stuff and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on bullet weight or brand, before I head over to Wally World to pick up a couple of boxes.  I've already mounted a 2-7 Burris and will probably get a chance to try it out this week.  Just when I thought that I was getting over Contenderitis, I had to bring home an Encore!

WOW--kind of ironic. I saw the title and said, "Wow, someone else out there who shoots the .270. I'll have to talk to this guy, too." So I click on the link, and up pops me.

I do like the .270. I don't handload for it yet. But I'm dying to try my brother-in-laws handloads. He has a pistol that he converted into a rifle (can't shoot pistols well). He's having some great success using Barnes Triple Shock X bullets in both 130 & 140 gr, although I'm not sure what his recepie is. http://www.barnesbullets.com/

I have had good luck with the Remington Core Lok in 150 gr. But I've found that my Encore prefers to eat Federal soft point round nose in 150 gr. I've got the hunter package and am pulling 2" groups at 50 yards (my normal range, as I like to stalk whitetails and get in close), and about 3-4" at 100 yrds off the bench. I'm sure that I can get those groups closer--it's a shooter problem. I'm trying to work through a slight flinch thing.

I have the 2.5-7 power scope, but I'm not too fond of the scope that came on this Thompson. I'd love to get the Bushnell Elite 3200, as I've heard nothing but good things from the guys here. I normally keep that scope set 2.5, and only dial it up to field judge deer.

Hope that helps.

Hunter,
It looks like you and I are the only ones with 270 Wins.  I'm planning to make it to the range this weekend to try mine out.  I picked up a box of 120 gr Remington factory ammo to start out with.  I've already ordered dies, but it probably will be next week before I can start reloading.  I already load for 2 Contenders and a 7-08 Savage Striker, so one more caliber shouldn't be a problem.  I think my 2-7 Burris will work fine, but I may put one of my 3-12 Burris on it for load development.  My old eyes can't see as well at 7 power as they can at 12X.  I'll keep you posted as to how well it shoots.

Well, it took me almost 3 months to get the .270 Encore to the range.  I've had problems with work schedules and bad weather, but today the sun was out, and I went to the range before I had to go in to work.  I was shooting some factory Remington 130gr at only 50 yards, since the 100 yard target stands were knee deep in mud, due to recent rain.  I was surprised how well the pistol shot, using the 2x-7x Burris.  After some scope adjustments, to get it centered on the paper, it was shooting 3/4" to 1" groups.  I shot up two boxes of the factory ammo, and was so excited about getting to shoot, that I really didn't pay any attention to the recoil.  Recoil must not have been that bad, since my hands and wrists aren't sore.  Anyway, I've made up my mind that this one is definately a keeper.

I also got a chance to shoot my 7-08 Savage Striker.  It was the first time shooting the Striker, since I had mounted a bipod.  With the Burris 3-12, it was shooting well under 1/2" at 50 yards.  I liked the bipod so much, that I may look for another one to put on the Encore.  Maybe the weather/work will improve, and I can get back to the range in less than 3 months.

270 fans. My encore 15" barrel love the 140gr Sierra BTHP gameking bullet and H4350 powder. Very accurate at 100yds. I haven't shot a deer with this load, just got the barrel last July, one heck of a groundhog round, my hunting buddy call it the meatgrinder.  JIM 8)

I didn't get the .270, but I did get a 30.06 yesterday. The rings will be sent to me, and I'll scrimp to get a 2 or 3x7 scope for it. I and my son just fired it into my "target oak" and the recoil isn't what i thought it would be...
