Author Topic: Soldering on a front sight (Read 540 times)

I am currently working on a scout rifle and the only step I have left is to attach a front sight ramp. I'm not putting it on the end of the barrel but closer to the front of the scope rail (gunsmith had to put that on for me). I tried using a solder from the hardware store but after firing a few rounds the barrel heated up and the ramp fell off. The barrel is stainless and has a teflon-ish finish to it. Will I be able to solder the ramp to this or will I have to have a hole tapped? Do I just need a better solder? Last question - can I hurt the barrel's temper by sweating on the ramp?

I seriously doubt the teflon finish will withstand the heat of soldering.. but that heat will not damage the barrel if using normal lead/tin solder. Silver bearing solder requires a lot more heat and I would advise protecting the bore from scale. Personally I would screw the ramp down.. Don't know what kind of ramp your using but standard long ramps usually have 2 screw holes and I'd use one of those..

I need someone to silver solder a scope rail on a single shot shotgun. How do you protect the bore from scale.

There are paste profucts that will prevent scale at fairly high temps. The lower temp silver solders would likely need little protection for the bore.
