Most accurate "small" Handi caliber?
« on: March 02, 2006, 04:01:21 PM »
Out of the small varmint calibers, which one has the reputation of being the most accurate out-of-the-box?

My 22-250 shot .75" @ 100yds. with Remingtom 55 gr. factory loads.

Getting it to shoot my handloads was another story. The good news is the more I shoot, the better it gets.

YMMV,

I am assuming that you mean in the rounds offered in a Handi & not bolt
gun offerings such as 22PPC & 222 Rem, 222 Rem. Mag. etc.

In the Handi offerings, I would figure the .223 as being the most consistant. I have heard of some 22-250's like the one just mentioned above doing well, but in the Handi, I believe if the goal is accuracy & not
as much FPS, I would try the .223.

"Out of the box"..I would say either the 24" 223 barrels or the 204's...and in rim fire the 17HMR's are nothing to sneeze at either from what I have heard..

.223 Handi Rifle

I can only give you my experience. I have a standard handi rifle in .223 caliber. No heavy barrel no trigger work 55 gain soft points Ultramax ammunition. It does sport a Harris bipod. At 200 yards I have a 1 1/4  inch group including the flyers.

I like the standard barrel because it just that much nicer to carry around. It could be that a heavy barrel would be more consistant over the course of the day, but I haven't had any real problems. Usually the PD lay down long enough to allow everything to cool off.

I only have 2 handi's (204 heavy, and 223 std) in calibers I would consider "small" they just happen to be my 2 most accurate handi barrels   The 204 out of the box shot better than the 223, but both are shooters with the right load.  I have shot several 5 shot groups in the .2-.3" range with the 204 and factory ammo.  The best I've gotten from the 223 is just below .5" which is good enough for me.

I have a 22 250 fluted,a 204,and a 24" 223. None of them will shoot less than 1 1/2" with factory ammo, but the 22 250 has shot 1/2" groups with handloads 1 time. It shot 3 groups at 1/2" and then went crazy. The 223 went through 400 rds.of assorted bullets,7 different powders, and every primer known to man before it got down to .6". I'm still working on the 204.I thought it was me not shooting my best, but the loads I'm trying in my 12bf 204 are still shooting 1/2" and less.  Digger

Dunno, when I wanted to buy it last, they didn't have it in stock yet. I have plenty of brass now, and I bought a Redding die set, so I'll be handloading for it.

My most accurate handi out of the box is my 17HMR.

The 204 Ruger my friend has is a tackdriver too and I have yet to hear of a complaint involving a 204 handi.

I'm new to the site but have been reading for two years. I'm hooked on the handies. Shot my new .223 fluted barrel pistol grip stock Friday and today. WOW! I am not a pro marksman, just hunt & shoot when I can. The new .223 has about 80 rounds of the winchester white box 45 gr. through it. 15 to 20 mph wind at the gun club, the 100 yard range is some what sheltered. 1 inch groups art normal I shoot 3 shot groups. On just about all the 2 inch shoot and see targets Two holes touching! I can't believe it. I have a harris bi pod and a simmons 4 x 20 1048 scope, definatly not top of the line. This .223 and my H&R sportester .17 are my most accurate. Also have a .223 ultra varmet with a laminated stock that shoots almost as good. You folks are great, I have learned a lot from your experience. Looking forward to ground hog season, hope I can share some good stories with you all.
