I noticed some one tried neck turning down about 3/16 of length( length of bullet engagement). Does this solve the 'coke bottling' effect and allow easy chambering without reducing case life??

I've tried it, and FOR ME the answer to your question is a resounding NO.

38-55 is a long case with thin walls.  The coke bottle effect is due as much to (in MY rifle) the need to use .380 diameter bullets as to the difficulty of seating a bullet with zero runout with respect to the axis of the case.  A sized case will show this bulge even when loiaded with a .375" bullet--if you look closely at factory ammo you can see it there too.

I do not size my cases after firing because, in my rifle, when using bullets correct for my bore (376" lands/378" grooves) sizing is not necessary.  What helps the most is running the loaded round into the sizing die(with the decapping stem removed of course)_ just enough to straighten the round out so that it chambers and extracts easily.  This also removes that unsightly bulge in the case.  Also puts a slight taper crimp on the round.

I paid a gunsmith $20.00 to ream the chamber on my .38-55. I use a universal decapper and don't resize the brass at all. I am able to use .381-.383 bullets. This results in good accuracy.

If I resize the brass and get the coke-bottle the bullets tumble.

"Bushing Neck Sizing" dies can be had at  www.meachamrifles.com  along with his "Easy Seater" die....Presently I'm using Lee die's but have my sizing die screwed out so that it only size's the neck part of the case that holds the bullet which for my rifle's I use .382" cast bullets..I seat with the Lee die which is to small in dia. for these fat bullets as they don't even reach the seating stem....I will be getting a Meacham Easy Seater.....loaded rounds are crimped lightly(mostly to take out case flare) with Lee Factory Crimp die which works great!...My Marlin 336CB and two old orig.94's  won't chamber such a fat round but my Uberti Low Wall does,and it's groove is .380"....I have a bunch of rounds loaded up for testing this spring........I am going to use the "Prof. Fuller Bullspit" fix job for the Marlin and 94's and buy a H&R Target and ream it with a standard 38-55 reamer like the Prof. did if it won't chamber these fat cast bullet's.....My Marlin shows a groove dia. of .381"+ but will only chamber a .379" bullet....I suspect the Prof. had the same problem with his H&R Target......
To my mind the 38-55 round would be the perfect low recoiling cast bullet round for all hunting here in the central interior of B.C.....45-70 is excellent also if you don't mind the recoil on the longer range loads......405 Winchester (1895 Takedown) is is being imported for evaluation also....can't wait to retire!......spring is just around the corner.... :grin: ...have a great weekend!...mic

Well Tim if we were related you could hunt here as I can host a non-resident relative....In Alberta they can host a non-resident related or not....Alberta has every big game species we have except for the Dall Sheep....and they have excellent read Huge! white tail....so there you go....are you shooting cast in your .405?...If so what loads and bullet....I was going to order a .405 (.413 I think) mold from Mt. Mold Dan but he won't be taking any orders till late summer.. :( .....Waters boiling better take my weekly dip....cheers mic

Mic, we're all related, aren't we!!! I've only shot the 300gr Hornady factory loads so far, but I've got handloads using the 350gr Barnes XFB all loaded up to see how they shoot, just waiting for the weather to warm and the range to open during the less busy weekdays. If those don't work out, I'll probably try the 350gr or 400gr Hawk .411"s. Northfork is working on a 360gr bullet in .411", maybe they'll have it available by the time I'm ready for it!!

Well I was born and raised near Chico Calif. and I did live in your fine state (Moses Lake) for a period of time.... we'll see how that works when I apply for your permit.... :-D .....mic
