Barrel for 243
« on: June 15, 2006, 08:12:17 AM »
Hey guys Im in the market for a aftermarket barrel for my rem mod 700 in 243. I have a Richards Microfit stock on the way and plan to glass/pillar bed and totally redo and accurize this rifle. My question is what oprions do I have on the barrel? I don't want a heavy or bull barrel but I would like something a little heavier than the factory taper. Also what twist rate do I need? I need  to shoot 95 to 100grns at deer but also want to shoot 75 to 85 grains at predators and varmints. It must be blued and needs to be 150 to 200$ max. Anything out there that fit my plans? Thanks in advance.

I put a Shilen on my .243 Ruger a few years back...I went to a 24 inch...I got the same taper you are talking about, a little heavier than standard, I can't recall what they called it....Go to www.shilen.com I just popped over there...they have all the info you need, contours, rate of twist, etc....

Another thought...I noticed you are in GA....I'm in NC...If you haven't tried the 85gr Sierra GameKing BTHP on deer...you need to...especially if you have shots past 200 yards...Federal loads in their Premium line if you don't reload.
