What's cheaper and more practical???
« on: March 04, 2006, 03:50:38 AM »
Hi All,

What's cheaper and/or more practical???  The installation of a Sako Extractor on a Rem 700 bolt or to just buy a second bolt amd have it fit?

I have a BDL SS in 375HH and was thinking of having a Sako type extractor installed to replace the rem collet.  Then I thought, how much could a second bolt cost to have fit?  Whan I travel with rifles, I usually bring a second scope, so, a second bolt would not be that much of a hassle.

What do you think?

To replace the Extractor with a Sako Extractor. Extractors aren't that hard to work on and would be pretty cheap. :D

Sako extractors will void any warranty and do weaken the action a bit. They also negate the sealed nature of the Remington M700 action.. I seriously boubt you'd ever have a problem with a M700 extractor, regardless of what you may have read.. If it were up to me I'd carry a backup rifle.. There are a lot of things that can fail on a rifle and the best insurrance is a complete back up,, another rifle..  Plus it's a great excuse for dedicated rifle loony to get another rifle!!  Barring that fitting a second bolt would be possible but bolts can be hard to come by. I thought such things were only sold by big-green installed and after the bolt install the original may no longer headspace corrently..

Two things. One, Gunnut is right. A Sako extractor is a giant step backward from the Remington design. You especially don't want one in a dangerous game rifle, 'cos if you blow a primer and the extractor goes flying you're stuck with a non functioning rifle. Two, if you are using a scope it will make the ejection straight up and not to the side. I replace quite a few bolts on "tactical" rifles that have Sako extractors because they throw the brass into the scope and back into the action. I go back to a Remington design and lo and behold they work right again! As for bolt availability, Dave Kiff is making them now to your specs as far as bolt diameter to fit your action better. You have to fit them and solder on the handle, but they work great and aren't expensive. BTW, IMHO there are only 2 reasons to put a Sako extractor on a Rem bolt. One is if you're building a PPC and the other is if you have a 721 or other early variant that they don't make extractors for anymore. Past that, leave it alone and it'll work best.

Nobade-I don't know whose making them but the older style extractors held in with a rivet are being made. Brownells catalogs.. I don't remember if they make all sizes..but some are available..

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies.  I'll probably leave it alone I guess.  I haven't had any problems with it at all.  I don't expect that replacement could be accomplished in the field, could it????

If it's a newer M700 with the snap in extractor and you have done it a few times..... otherwise,,probably not.  They can be a pain..

Hi Gunnut, thanks for the tip. The ones that are hard to get now are the M721 and 722 ones. They're not the same as the M700, and I haven't found any sources for them. For the M700 I get them from Remington - they've always got them and once you get on their restricted list they will sell them direct. (They accepted my type 07 FFL. Don't know if they'll take a 01 or not.)

How are the 722-721 extractors different.. I have replaced them but can't remember.. Getting old I guess.  Nothing works like it used to..
