I just purchased a new Katahdin 45-70 barrel and it is shooting about 8 inches high at 50 yds with my rear sight all the way down. It seems to me that it needs to have a taller front sight, probably at least .060 or more.

Has anyone else had this problem? :?

If the rear sight is all the way down, then there's your problem. When you move the rear sight down, it RAISES the frontal point of view, thus making your shot hit higher. Try going the other direction and I'm sure you'll get it fixed.

Think again, I need to RAISE my point of view to make it equal my point of impact. If I raise the rear sight it will only shoot higher.

Yes it sounds like you need a taller front sight. T/C makes 6 different height front sights. I had the same problem on a (can you guess?) 45-70 Super 14 barrel. Mine shot about 6" high with the sight all the way down. Do what I did. Call T/C and ask to speak to a gunsmith in repair. They will send you a front sight for free that is taller (at least they did for me).

Yes, I knew I needed a higher front sight, but just wondered if others had the problem and looks like they have. I guess they grabbed the wrong sight on the assembly line. The front sight is about the same height as the rear (when the rear is down) and that will never work on a tapered barrel.

I talked to Ed of Eds Contenders and will see him in the morning and see it he has a proper sight in his junk box. If not I will call TC.

Oops, Measured my barrel and it is not tapered. It is a optical illusion with the forearm on. I took the front sight off and set it next to the rear sight and it is about .050 or so shorter.

I ordered a custom shop Encore barrel in 375 Winchester last summer and had the same problem but in reverse. I couldn't get it to go high enough at 50 yards and called T/C. They also did me right by sending some shorter front sights blades.

Then after all that I went and put a scope on it and took the sights off. Good thing because with 220 Gr Hornady's it'll shoot 1.112" five shot groups at a 100 yards. Love that barrel!!!
