I would say that the single best time to call coyotes is in the dead of winter, when food gets scarce!

The second best time to call coyotes would be in late spring when the parents are out, training the pups!
Here, I think I'd suggest quieter/higher pitched calls, to resemble the sound of the pups, to get a shot at the parents or the other way around to get a shot at pups!

Just my opinion, but it has worked for me!

Thanks for the responces guys. I don't think you'll get upset if I disagree well ya?
I found the best time to hunt coyotes is when they first get on there own around Aug. and Sept. They are young and dumb and alot more coyotes are around at that time of the year.
It's true Dec. can be good because they need the food for that cold weather.  But what you have left is smart coyotes that dogged bullets, traps, the ADC and trucks. Those are a little harder to fool then the young ones in Aug. and Sept. don't you think?

Lets see what some of these other guys think.

yes thats a good time also.I  am there gettin those filthy dumb ones. But the best times is like I said early.weather shifts.I have had on days when Ice and fog were present after a storm as much as 20 plus coyotes running in to the call at the same time from every point on the compess..this has happened on more then one occasion.during a rain storm (not cold enough to snow but very cold)I saw a pack cross a road in front of me I drove way past em.then called to them I had every one so it seemed come to me.shot four.
whats the name of yer motel??am supposed to go to some ranchs up in that neck of the woods to do some predator control next week.mostly coyote problems.

Jerry, I'm talking out west, your talking back east and you may be 100% right.

Kyote, you can't miss it, it's the only place that says hunters welcome and owned by a VET on the corner SE corner of 380 and 54. Look for a truck that says coyote coffin on the back lol.

Your doing some predator control in this area? I know most every rancher in the area, what ranch has a coyote problem? The ADC stays at our place twice a year killing coyotes.

By the way, you may be interested to know I have the only predator hunting museum in the country at the motel, all I can say is you'll like it.

JD338, most hardcore coyote hunters don't hunt them during denning season, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun. I guess we like more to shoot at come fall.

Personally I don't hate coyotes,  I totally respect the animal for it's ability to survive and I enjoy hunting them.

Somehow I don't like the idea of shooting a female coyote with 6 or 8 pups in her and they all die. Or even worse, kill the mother coyote that has a den full of pups and they all starve to death.

I'd rather call them in one or two at a time and shoot them if I can. I'd call that a little more sporting and a little more conservative. No law aganist it, you can shoot them any time in most places. Just trying to give you something to think about....Good Hunting. :D

I Agree With Onecoyote whole Heartly.

I know some people cuss them and call them names and maybe they deserve some cussing, But to me they are cunning and inteligent. They have a hard road to hoe with every one gunning for them. I love to hunt them and do it after they come out of the den and have some size to them.
Even when I ran cows and the coyotes would take the calves I did not hate them but i would try to elimanate the problem. If a person loves to hunt them as much as i he or she will try to regulate his hunting so he will have a fresh batch each year. To this day I will not delibertely go out to shoot one unless he is being a nusance and killing live stock. This has been my main source of action for longer than i care to tell :D  :D  :D ......Joe..........

my bud and I go to one of our favorite coyote places about this time of year.and into april.we shoot PDs on this ranchers land.several times while shooting in areas a big ole coyote gets up and starts walkng away from the noise we are making.most of the time they are soooo pregnat they walk just like the wimin folk do when they are at 8-9 months.poor ole butt just waddles.me and my bud take carefull aim.as we do not want to miss any PDs so she can come back and feed till full so she can have a healthy litter..when wall mrt has the dog fud on sale I buy mucho of the bags and take out to areas where I know dens are.and dump the bags out.I have a 5 gallon buckets that I cut in half.and during the spring -summer all our fud scraps go into it.leave it out under the peacan trees.and it is always licked clean in the morning..I don't know if that is a good idea.as last spring there were Mt lion tracks in my fresh tilled garden.

onecoyote,

The coyotes start denning up here in MI in March.
We have some good numbers of coyotes in our area and they take far too many Turkeys, some deer, and a few house pets. They are also pretty educated from hunting pressure so I don't think too many are harvested. I missed one two weeks ago Sunday 11:00AM, with my 2500HD!
