Some notes on recoil

There seem to be a lot of "new rifle questions" all with questions"about hwo they recoil?"   I to am in the throws of retooling my arsenal.  

Here are some recoil figures on comonly asked about rounds, compared to some shot gun data.  I found this to be very interesting indeed.  Enjoy, and good luck on your new thubder stick.

also, gun fit, and gun weight are very critical in how the shooter percieves the recoil.

Just to add to that, like the last post, gun fit and weight and the recoil pad make a huge difference.  I have a savage in 308 with a thin rubber recoil pad that kicks pretty hard.  I also have a remington 700 in 300 mag with a limbsaver pad and it is more comfortable to shoot with hot 180 grain handloads than the 308 is with normal factory ammo.  They both weigh about the same also.  The table with recoil levels is a good starting guidline, but don't think just because one particular rifle is comfortable to shoot that a different make of gun will be too, even if they are in the same cartridge.

Looking at the bottom of the list makes me wonder what the recoil is on my 7lbs 10oz Benelli SBE with the 2 1/4oz turkey loads. No wonder I dont want to shoot to many at a sitting.

12 gauge, 3" (1 7/8 at 1210) 7.5 60.1
I fired one of those, sittin' down with my back up agin a tree. :shock: The next day I bought a 20 gauge for my turkey gun.    :?

This goes to show why despite all the hype I was surprised the first time I shot a rifle.  I grew up hunting with 12ga slugs and, later, heavy-loaded muzzleloaders.  A .30-06 or .308 is TAME compared to my experience.  I recently bought a 300 WM which I haven't shot yet, but it's a little on the heavy side (Sendero) so I don't think I'll have a flinch problem.

hmmm i guess i never really noticed the 300 win mag kicking that hard maybe a little push but thats all...i dont have a sissy pad on it either. i am a pretty big boy though(6'3", 220) i guess i need a bigger gun :wink:

You are right about that. I have a Laminated stock Sendero(limited run) in
300WM & due to the weight it is not bad at all.

I don't have any problem shooting a 338 Win Mag or a 458. I just hold on tight and fire. :D
