DW in 44 mag
« on: March 10, 2006, 09:17:02 AM »
I have been looking back through old issues of shooters bible and noticed that my 44 mag is not recomended for cast bullets but no reason is given. Help me out here guys I planned on purchasing a kieth mold in 250 gr with gas check. Before I make the 70.00 investment in this can some one tell me what is up with this? I have scanned though the column here but can't find much on this subject.

Woods,
Some older version Dan Wessons came cam with a "power control" option (a ring of holes round the barrel about 1/2" from the muzzle.  Through this system, lead fouling would built up between the barrel and the shroud and among other things make removal of the barrel impossible, or close to it.  As long as your gun does not have a "power control" barrel installed, i know of no reasons to exclude cast bullets.

I am so glad to hear that. I read the first post and started to worry about it. My shroud has the holes but not the barrel.

I had called DW (CZ) and asked about getting the ported (power Control ?) barrel. They said they no longer produce or recommend those for the reasons mentioned by RollTide.

I plan on shooting the federal 300 gr Cast Core ammo during my first hog hunt.
