Anyone refinished an H&R wood stock?
« on: March 06, 2006, 02:52:40 PM »
I bought what looks like an older Monte Carlo stock that was supposed to be off a shotgun.  No deep scratches but the finished is scratched in several places.  Would it come decent if I stripped, sanded and refinished it?  Am I better to leave well enough alone?

Strip off the old finish with varnish remover. Raise any dents with a steam iron and a wet cloth. Let it dry and then sand it. Stain it if you like and apply several coats of Linspeed Finish as per directions.

freds got the idea, all depends on what yuor going to do with it? you want a show piece do it in a nice stain and clear coated like fred said or use polyurathane? if you wanted something to carry in the back of your truck or 4wheeler , maybe a camo pianted one? ive stained a few different colors like greens and blacks, you can use fusion paint and go with bright colors like yellow and safety orange? hey sky's the limit,

I have refinished several Handi stocks and they came out pretty nice.  Fred has the right idea.  I used Linspeed also, as I have used that on other guns since the late '60s with good results.  I also did one with satin poyurethane and that worked out better in our SE Alaska rain country, though it isn't traditional.  Good luck!

I used the MinWax Gel Stain and some spray on Satin Spar Polyurethane with good results.  The Gel Stain goes on very evenly if you need it.  The factory varnish/poly peeled off mine.  The MinWax Spar Poly spray was easy to apply.  I did need a brush on poly for the ends of the stock though.

I have refinished several H&R stocks as well as reconfigured them, I converted a laminate Monte Carlo into a standard drop laminate stock and have changed several pistol grip stocks into straight english style (squire) stocks and refinished them after the woodwork. I have used both oil based stain and Minwax water based stain and finished them all with several coats of Waterlox Original Tung Oil and have had excellent results on them all....<><....

What's the process with the Lin-Speed?  Do you stain the stock first and then put coats of Lin-Speed on?  Do you just use the Lin-Speed?

Just so you know about other options, I've used Linspeed and Tru-oil, the Tru-oil is a much nicer and more durable finish, easier to apply and cures quicker in my opinion.

Just my  :money:
