For starters I would go with a .223. As far as the calibers you listed, I wouldnt use them over 75-100 yards max. But thats just me. Justin

Coryt, a varmint hunter would use a 22 mag, 17HMR or 22Lr, but not a serious predator hunter. Not that any of the above won't kill a coyote if placed in the right place at the right range. It's just not the right caliber to use on coyote sized animals. A .17 center fire, 204, 222, 223, 22-250 or a 220 swift would better suted for a varmint-predator calibers. You do what you want, I just gave you my 2 cents.....Good Luck :D

yes you can, for some one that has hunted for many years.forget all this rim fire stuff for coyotes untill you learn to call/hunt them. they are a tough gritter.and arn't ground hogs pretty big?like shootin a bag of sand.if your serious.get some serious tools for the job.then think about the rim fires after you have learned.
a 22-250 ought to suit your needs well.as for the scope.hmmmm.anything will do till it breaks.then get a leupold.as for calling.hand / mouth calls work.buy some calling tape and watch em.midway has several are you can find them on the internet.try the randy anderson ones.there is a lot more to it then this.there are others here that will guide ya.just can't make ya drink the water though.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

Welcome to Graybeard Outdoors :D
I am going to have to agree with the others as the rimfires are just too light for serious work.
I use a .22-250 but handload some tough bullets in the intrest of saving the hides.

I'd suggest a 223. The 223 can easily handle any varmint/predator hunting you're likely to get into.

Groundhogs are indeed tough critters, and coyotes can cover a lot of ground if you make the slightest mistake with any of the three calibers you mentioned.

If you really want the specialized varmint rig then go with the 17 Remington or one of the other centerfire 17"s.  They shoot fast and flat and you can watch the bullit hit the target, sort of like shooting a laser.  I have a nice Savage 10 in 17 Remington and it is great, I switched from a 22-250.  Larry  P.S.: A 22 mag will max out at 50 yards if you are very good.

A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

Are there any factory centerfire loads that can be used for Fox and Coyotes that will not result in having to do a lot of sewing of the pelt?

coryt  Welcome to GBO, Like some of the guys are saying you need to stick to the center fire rifles for serious varmint hunting. Like the 17 Rem, 222, 223, 223wssm,222mag, 22-250, or one of the 6mms like the 243 win or 6mm Rem. I  use all the above for different things. I don't think you will be satisfied with any of the Rim fires for varmint hunting. Good luck to ya and stay safe :D .........Joe.........

I'd pick a center fire round for general purpose varmiting and predator control as well.  I'd keep a good rimfire for those places where hunting with a centerfire would make hunting impossible or impractical.  My thinking is it's better to hunt with a rimfire than not to hunt at all.

If I were just starting I think a .223 would be a good fit for all but the really long shots.  Around here where I live, the range of the .223 is more than adaquate.  It's about the cheapest round to shoot if you don't reload, and factory ammo is every where.

The debate on .22mag versus .17HMR has been around from the announcement of the .17HMR and you'll find many opinions.  Personally, I've never had a .22mag that could come close to the accuracy of my .17HMR.  That's not to say that there hasn't been some accurate .22mags or that the accuracy of guns chambered in .22mag might have improved in the last few years, but I've had several rifles in .22mag and was never impressed by there accuracy.

The accuracy of the .17HMR is impressive.  You will find a lot of post by people who have had sucess killing coyotes with the .17HMR and others who have had miserable failures.  I don't consider the .17HMR as a coyote round, but if one came by while I was out hunting with the .17HMR I'd sure find out for myself.  I consider both the .22mag and .17HMR lite for coyotes.  As both are lite then bullet placement becomes more important and that's where I believe the .17HMR to have the edge.  I'm sure others will post with a different opinion on the .22 mag and .17HMR as their experience has lead them to believe differently.   This discussion is certain to continue but has already been had, over and over.

I reckon that you are finding the gencos to be accurate in your rifle.the hornadys molys I am shooting in 25gr.have been fatal on the coyotes.there a little hollow point bullet.are those gencos expolsive?do you get much penatration with them?

Hi we have to use a 22 rimfire on game and fish WMA land. The 22 mag work good out too 100 yrds and under. SHot placement is every thing. I guess the ones i have killed with the 22 mag must have been ALL luck...
I have a
.223
22 250
25 06
That i could use but the law says to use a 22 rimfire i use it. My 22 mag I guess i am a varmit hunter NOT a predator hunter. :? VM

A 22 Mag is the best thing going if you have to use a rimfire, like at night etc.  This is the one I use, illuminated 2.5X scope and a 19 inch barrel.  Larry
