Red label durability
« on: September 08, 2006, 12:29:52 PM »
I have a 12 gauge Red Label with the target gey finish/synthgetic stock.  It is my waterfowl and nasty weather gun.  I haven't shot it a whole lot - but so far I really like it.  I just got into sporting clays and have started to be more aware and critical of my stance and shooting techniques.  I have found that my Red Label fits me like it was custom built for me - better than some of my other double guns that I had always thought would be better for clays and upland shooting.  The Ruger is bigger and heavier, but it comes up exacty right and naturally.  So, I am thinking of trading in my other doubles for another Red Label for clays and upland - with 28" barrels, wood stock. I have often read that the two most durable O/U's are the "B"'s - Browning and Beretta.  They will stand up to sustained use for clays, years of use in the field. How about the Ruger?  I have a lot of faith in Ruger's engineering and I like everything about the Red Label.  Does anyone have any comment on the durability?  Is this a double gun that will last as long as the "B"'s?  You comments and experience appreciated...  Thanks.

I have owned Ruger Red Labels for many years.  They have served me well, and if taken care of properly, they will last a lifetime.  You said the Ruger fits you, and shoots well.  In sporting clays, these are two of the most important elements to success.   The extra weight of the Ruger is actually a benefit because it encourages a smooth swing and a positive follow through.  If you are looking for a great gun, it sounds like you already have it.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a second gun for shooting sporting clays, both the Browning and the Beretta O/Us are excellent.  There are others that are in that same price range that are also excellent including SKB, Franchi, and others.

One last thought.  Don't look for the magic gun that will break all the targets.  The one you shoot best will do the job, but it takes practice.

Points well taken.  I appreciate your input.  I also like the Briley tubes in the Ruger.  I think I'll be leaning towards another Red Label.
