Didn't know where to post this so will start here.  I've been seeing this forum mentioned on the Cast Boolits forum and checked you out.  Looks like a good place to be.  I'm no computer whiz so will probably make some mistakes until I get the hang of how these forums operate.  Look forward to sharing with you all.

Welcome lovedogs,

Nice bunch of people here, in my opinion.  If I do say so myself... :D

Are you a handgun hunter?  If so, what are you hunting with?

Thanks for the welcome

Thank you guys for the welcome.  Yes, I do hunt with handguns.  I've been a hunter since age 7, so have been at it for 51 yrs. now.  I no longer hunt birds but do a lot of varmint and big game hunting.  In Montana that means prairie dogs, coyotes, antelope, deer (both whitetail and mule), and elk.  My hunting is probably about equally divided between rifle & pistol.

The locker contains a variety of .22's, .22 centerfires, a custom .25-06, a couple .45-70's, an assortment of revolvers, one .22 match pistol, and a T/C Contender with about a half dozen bbls.

Having worked my last 14 yrs. with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service on several wildlife refuges I was able to get in on lots of predator control programs and also deer reduction programs.  So there has been lots of hunting of predators and deer which gave me lots of fun and experience with hunting handguns and rifles.  I had the best job on Earth and hated to retire.  But a major horse wreck put me into an early retirement.  The surgeons did a wonderful job but I could no longer meet the physical requirements to do the law enforcement and fire fighting portions of my duties so was forced to retire.  So now I am able to hunt coyotes and shoot prairie dogs for the local ranchers.  Both are really a kick with handguns!  Nailing a big fat "prairie poodle" at almost 300 yds. with a .223 Contender is fun.

Liking all kinds of shooting I got into long-range silhouette shooting a couple years ago.  We shoot out to 876 yds. at animal silhouettes, the farthest one is a buffalo.  We use old time rifles of at least .375 caliber, lead bullets, iron sights.  A challenge at a half-mile, and more fun than an adult ought to be allowed to have.  This is where the .45-70's shine.

Guess I should cut this off.  I could talk all day on this stuff.  Instead, I'll look forward to sharing experiences with all of you in the future.  Glad to meet you guys.

Best Regards,  Mike aka "Walks With Dog"

Lovedogs here...  I tried to post a reply to questions some of you wrote and asked but it got lost somehow.  Probably due to operator malfunction as I'm not very good with computers and am new at this forum thing.

Some asked what I hunted with.  Boy, what a topic.  That could take a lot of writing to explain.  To keep it short I'll just mention some I hunt with at present.  If anyone wants to know more, feel free to ask.

At present I'm only using a small variety of .22 and .44 revolvers and a half-dozen Contender barrels.  I hunt prairie dogs, coyotes, antelope, deer, and (rarely) elk.  For casual outings I usually pack a revolver but for serious hunting the Contender usually gets the nod.  For tiny critters it's a Super 14 Stainless .22 LR Match.  For prairie dogs and coyotes I've got two .223's, a 10 in. and a Super 14 Stainless.  I traded off my
.35-.375 KAP barrel, which was good for elk using 200 gr. Hornady SP's at 2000 FPS.    For antelope it's the Custom Shop 12 in. Stainless bull barrel in .30-30.  Using either 130 Hornady SSP's or Nosler 150 gr. BT's it's an honest 200 yd. pistol.  But my favorite, and the one that sees the most deer inards, is the Super 14 Stainless .44 mag.

So far I've always used jacketed bullets but hope to use some cast ones for hunting this fall.  The new Saeco .44 RNFPGC just has to be tried.

I've hunted for just over 50 yrs. and have used all the standard caliber rifles and pistols but recently got into long-range silhouette shooting with an H&R Buffalo Classic  (.45-70) so had to try it out last year.  In competition I shoot 500 gr. lead in it.  We shoot a half-mile at animal silhouettes.  But for hunting last fall used a 300 gr. jacketed.  I liked it a lot.  The deer are easy to find after being shot with it.  You just follow a very short and very wide blood trail, but it doesn't bloodshot the meat badly at all.

Any more questions, just ask.  I'm here to share and help if I can.

Howdy, Old Griz!  Nice to make your acquaintence.  And I appreciate your Bible verse, too.  I'm also a Christian and always like seeing a brother in the faith.

The dog thing is because of sentimental issues.  My career with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service came to an abrupt halt due to a horse wreck.  After 15 months of doctors and surgeries, then another 15 months of therapy and rehabilitation I could no longer pass my physical requirements for law enforcement and fire fighting, so was forced into early retirement.  The lady I was married to couldn't handle that and we wound up divorced.

That was 14 yrs. ago.  At the time I had a Brittany named Josh.  He and I toughed it out together.  He swallowed something he shouldn't have and had to be laid to rest.  It really tore me up.  Seemed I was losing everything that mattered.

In a few months the Lord led me to another dog.  That's quite a story.  He was adopted from a shelter and turned out to be the best companion I've ever known, human or canine.  He was Border Collie/Australian Shepard and was the smartest thing ever walked on all fours. I named him after Tell Sackett in the old western movie "The Sacketts". He died of a ruptured tumor on his spleen at 10 yrs. old.  We'd been so close and done so much together it was like losing a son.  His ashes are in an urn on my nightstand and we'll both be scattered over the mountains someday.  Tell was my boy!

A few years ago I rescued a dog who's been in Herding Dog Competitions who'd quit herding.  She had been abused and starved down and was about to be shot.  It took her a long time to come around and she's still pretty timid.  But she's a great, tender-hearted little gal.  Named Gail, short for her registered name, Dixie-Land Gail.  She's turning out to be a good companion and as a Border Collie her herding instinct has returned now that she's not being abused.  She will round up anything now, even a coyote!

Call me sentimental, I guess.  I love my dogs.  So I use the user name of lovedogs.  When I'm on the silhouette range or some place where they use aliases I go by "Walks With Dog", a name given me by an old Sioux because I always have a dog at my side.

Look forward to sharing things with you and all these other folks on the forum.  God bless!

:cb2: We found a sick, starving, stray German Shepherd on Christmas Eve a year ago. The pound was closed and no one else would take her in. So my wife decided to keep her. She's been the sweetest dog I have ever seen. She craves love and attention. And no one can come close to my wife without risking life and limb. Great dog.

lovedogs - let me officially welcome you to the Handgun Hunting Forum.  The name given you by that old Sioux sounds like it fits you well.  I think that if he were to see me with my dogs he would call me "trips over dogs frequently".  You may wish to visit the Hunting Dog Forum - lots of dog lovers there too and a lot fo fellas who will agree that a dog rescued is a friend for life.  I have two such now, which is probably why I'm always tripping over them (lolol).  Mikey.
