One Yote down
« on: March 17, 2006, 03:04:09 AM »
First one this season and the season is almost over.  Locally we had hit them hard last year and the lack of coyote noise this year showed that the numbers were down and we just were not seeing many this winter.  I had seen one, twice, but it wasn't where I could shoot it and I have seen tracks but nothing to indicate a den or significant sized pack.

This morning at 6:15 I am mixing up my dog's breakfast and look out my picture window to see one about 50m off into the woods - just standing by a tree looking for movement by my pond.  As I get upstairs and get the window open here comes #2, only this guy is much bigger than the first one I saw.  Just as I get the rifle out the window he begins to move but I was able to plant one into his chest and he took off.  He had been hit hard but was on the run.  I dressed and went after him but couldn't find him - no snow for tracking and no blood trail.  However, with where I hit him he won't last long and I am hoping that is one less dominant male to foster a pack this spring.   I think it's time to get one of those Cabelas coyote callers and put it to work before the population starts burgeoning again.  Mikey.

My friend shot one last week. It weighed 39 lbs. He wanted to get it mounted but it had a little mange so he's not going to (or can't, I don't know how that works). He shot him with a 12 ga. using #4 buckshot.

rebAL - howdy neighbor!  I hit him with a 22lr - that's my window rifle.  I have taken 7 with that rifle previously so I know it works on them.  Most have either spun to the impact giving me time for a second shot or run 10 yds and piled up.  I shot at one and missed - he ran off 50 yds and turned to look at what was going on and that was his mistake - he didn't go any further.  Those I have wounded, which is not my preference, have either run off and died (behind my neighbor's house - he doesn't mind, he has lost a couple of his cats to the coyotes) or been eaten by their own, maybe (even hopefully).  However, I have been thinking about one of the newer Savage Modle 40s in 22 Hornet or possibly one of the newer semi-auto 22 mags - either one should be more decisive than the 22lr.

I had mentioned seeing another one that I think is the smaller female and I'm thinking that this fella may have come in to see if there were any lonely country gals in the neighborhood.  I'm hoping I was able to end that relationship before she started in heat but I'm not sure.  I'm just gonna post myself by the window to see if anyone else comes along before season is over.  Mikey.

Sounds like you got yourself a nice window there Mikey;  I've got an open field to shoot in too & a NEF .223 handi-rifle at the ready but it sounds like you're pickin them off before they show up over here. .  That's ok by me as long as they end up dead!  Keep up the good work!  Al

He shot a fox the same night. He hunts then all the time. I'm gonna go with him next year. I think I'd like that type of hunting better then deer hunting!
