Favourite 500gr bullet for H&R 45-70
« on: February 23, 2006, 08:01:00 AM »
Since I am continuing to struggle to get the Lee 405gr  caste bullet to group, I looking at trying a 500gr bullet, any favourites amongst comercial or caste bullets for your H&R 45-70, wanting to launch the bullet at about 1000fps so powder space should be no issue,
Thanks Howard

hunternz.
I have just started to work with the 500 Gr. cast bullet. I am using the 3r 500 gr. Lee mold. Am using Starline brass. WLR primers and AAXMP5744 for powder. First serious 100 yard five shot group measued 2.313". These five rounds were water cooled and shot as cast.
Check your mail in the AM I am sure dodd3 will have a suggestion also for the 500 grain cast.
I have had excellent results with the Lee  405. Let us know what you are doing maybe we can help.
HTH. Rich.

45/70 cast bullet loads

:grin: I have no experience with the H&R 45/70 although I'm trying to find a BC barrel or send a receiver to the factory to be fitted. I think the H&R barrel in 45/70 has a 1 in 22 twist. I had a Rem. RB at one time that had a Douglas barrel in a 1 in 14 twist, which handled the long heavy bullets better. This may be a moot point, because some of the guys on the forum get great performance from their  H&R 45/70's. Just my 2 cents. Hunman55

Twist rates are all listed in the FAQ, 45-70 is 1:20". :wink:

Howard, I've flown these cast bullets in my BC with success:
* ... Lyman 457123 - 535gr
* ... Lyman 457661 - is the Dixie Bore Rider - 510gr
* ... DD/PRS 500gr Twin Groove-Version 1 - 500gr
The 2nd version of the DD/PRS custom mold will be out in the Spring and it is based on a Postell design.

All these bullets were shot with Goex, Swiss, H777, IMR5744 and H4895 with decent groups out to 600 yards.  Grouped a 6.8MOA @600yds this Summer using the Twin Groove over H777

45/70 twist rate

:-) You're right , Quickdtoo, about the twist rate of the H&R 45/70(1 in 20). All I had to do was look at the FAQ's. I was wrongly thinking  Trapdoor Springfield. How did you get that name anyway? :D  :D  Hunman55

I used to own a '98 Dodge Durango, was a member of the Durango Owners Club. Me and several other members were in a Durango or "D" chat room talking about performance modifications to our 5.9L Ds, Tony D aka QuickD had done the same mods as I did and I referred to my self as Quickd too and the name stuck, been using it as a handle ever since. :grin:

I've been using a Saeco 1881 style 500 gr. cast w/ 20:1 alloy, sized .459 and lubed w/ SPG, 23 1/2 gr. 5744 in my Buffalo Classic.  It shoots great and gets 1180 FPS at 90 degrees.
