the 45-70 and modern ammunition

how far does it resonably allow shots on deer/elk/bear . i know it was used at 500+ yards on buffalo but what does the performance in modern terms allow an ethical hunter achive ? thanx,superdown :D

I would say 150 yards with modern ammunition and maybe 200 with the right gun and loads and if the shooter is up to it. Just remember they were slaughtering buffalo way back. Also a lot of the buffalo hunters opted for the 45-110 or 45-120 for the long shots.
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

Have you seen the new Hornady Leverevolution ammo?

They claim this ammo will extend the distance to 300 yards for a 325 grain bullet in 45-70.

As soon as they are on the shelf, I will buy a box and let you know!  :grin:

I too am anxious to try the lererloution ammo in my little gibbs frontier .45/70. I think the pointed polmer tip will increase the feeding reliability as well as the balistics.. come on spring 2006..(thier release date...) Hell,, maybe I will dig out the old 336 30/30 too..  What great times these are..
