How in the world do ya'll hit those things???
« on: March 12, 2006, 03:00:55 PM »
My first taste of metallic silhouette shooting really gave me a wake up call.    I got sight settings today, plus a reality check.  How in the world do ya'll hold tight enough to hit those animals?  My friend has a set, and I set them out at the required distances.  Unfortunately, the wind was howling (kept blowing the ram off the stand).  Probably 25mph.  I hit the chicken and pig pretty regularly, but the ram?  It took me 6 shots to hit it, and it looked TINY at 24X.  Also, my ammo showed to be inconsistent (Wolf match target); do ya'll grade and weigh your match ammo, cause my sighters showed plenty of vertical variation, assume from velocity spreads (this from a bench rest, not standing)?  I am in shock   !!  Do people really clean these courses?  I see some dragging and jerking in my future on the rams!! lol :)

Very few have shot 40's. I don't know that I have ever seen one...(Has Troy done it in the last 3-4 years at Winnie?, seem to remimber watching him clean into the last bank???) Seen plenty of 39's, and 38's but that's from "The Best of the Best".

Us mere mortals simply stive to better OUR personal scores while building off our average scores. AJJ has tought me alot about this process, I think it does wonders for personal groth and mental management skills.

When I started smallbore silo about 6 years ago, I was happy to hit 10. With a lot of practice I worked my way up to the low 20's. I finally decided to get better at it, and purchased an air rifle to practice with in my back yard. My trigger control got a lot better. Then I switched to a 36X scope, and learned to use it. By being able to pick where on the animal I want the shot to break as opposed to shooting at the animal, my scores are in the low 30's now. It's taken a long time and many cases of rimfire ammo and air rifle pellets fired to do it. I still have a long way to go, but am at least seeing progress. Now my kid is on the same road - she shot her first 10 a couple of weekends ago.
