Time to say hi and show off my gun.
« on: March 18, 2006, 11:10:09 AM »
I have been lurking for a while, and reading back posts. I have been hunting with muzzleloaders for about 20 years. The first one i bought was a CVA hawkins. After I got married I got a knight BK92. I used it for a lot of hunting for deer and elk.
Here in Idaho we have new traditional hunts. These hunt in a nut shell, are for the Hawkins type of guns, lead bullets no sabots, and loose powder. There are some guys that are finding inlines that match the regulations. I decided last year to try to put together a gun that will shoot large lead bullets with the best of them.
I started out with a stock and lock from a TC renegade I got off ebay. I put on a Green Mountain Stainless steel LHR (long range hunter) Barrel. The barrel has a 1-28 twist.
I shot this gun last year a little and it shot very well with the No Excuses 460 gr bullet. The only problem I had last year was the sights stunk for shooting farther than 75 yards.
I decided on the Lyman 57SML peep and the lyman 17 AML front sight thanks to the guys on this sight and another sight. Here is the picture of the outcome. The bullets I was using are expensive, mostly because of shipping. I am thinking about moulding my own, got any Ideas? I am thinking a lyman plains bullet 395 gr. Anyone have any luck with them?
 Well here is the picture.

Here's a toast to your first post:

Nice looking rifle.  Can't give you any help on bullet choices.  I spent last summer playing with patched round balls in my LH Renegade 54.  I may try some conicals this year.

Is yours a 50 cal?

Yes, it is a 50. Here in my area we have only two choices for bullets. TC, or Hornady. If we want anything else we have to order it.  Ron

Nice gun.

The Lee REAL has been very accurate in my guns, I don't hunt so can't comment on its use for that. The longer REAL is 320 grains in 50 caliber. The moulds are cheap so it wouldn't hurt to give them a try.

Second the motion on the REALs. Plenty of time to try everything before next Sept.  :D

I cast both lee REALs and TC maxi's in the fifty. The only deer I ever shot at with a muzzleloader was with a .50 cal maxi I cast. 70 yards done deal. Satisfying to use something you cast! I get good results consistantly with the TC - the reals are somewhat new to me. I don't shoot "mega loads" and have great results. Have fun!

I don't know about a REAL bullet in a 1:28" twist.  I had real good results with one in a .50 T-C Pennsylvania Hunter I had at one time, 1:60" twist.

I would just do a search for "cast bullets" and then start contacting the companies which pop up.  Look for one which will make bullets in the mold you are interested in.  Then try the bullets and see which works best in your rifle.  You can then either continue buying bullets or get the mold and pour you own.
