Anyone have a G2 Contender 209x50 Barrel?-need input
« on: February 28, 2006, 04:53:35 PM »
I've been wanting to get a muzzleloader for the times I need one (I used to have one, so I know about them).

I have many Contender barrels (pistol and rifle) and was thinking of getting a G2 Pistol Frame (so I can use my pistol barrels if I desire) and later picking up a buttstock and 209x50 barrel.  I really like the idea of the 50 over the 45, but can the Contender in 50 perform well.

I could get an Encore, but that's a whole new animal and I was trying to stay with what I have so I can swap around.  I realize I can buy an aftermarket Contender Blackpowder barrel that fits my old style frame, but I kinda like the idea of the G2 with the recock ability.  I'd probably leave it set up as a Carbine as I have a 7 TCU and 375 Win Barrel to go with it.  Then I could leave my old style setup as a pistol.

So, thoughts on performance of the G2 Contender Muzzleloader.

How easy is this barrel to clean, is there a removable plug in the rear?

thanks

Jason

I have the G2 209x45.  It is the same as the Encore barrel as far as the breech plug goes.  It is just shorter and lighter.  The 50 caliber must be really light because there does not seem like there is much meat on the 45 barrel compared to other muzzleloaders.  Mine shoots great after a few modifications which was to have the QLA removed and I added an oversize hinge pin.  It is a lightweight muzzleloader and I really like it.

Also check out the new Omega carbine, I think it's called the X7. 24'' barrel laminated wood stock and peep sights I think. This would probably be a lot cheaper. My 28" ,original $340 doller model, omega shoots very well, 335g .45cal WFN hardcast up to about 1600 fps or so, I use 65g of 777 ffg loose powder for 1400fps, shots touch, recoil and blast is minor, power a plenty.

If you are going to buy a G2 you might as well get an Encore. The old contender stocks do not fit the new G2 frame and all the barrels are bull. The Encore has a new muzzle loader barrel this year that has a lot of changes. The plug is easier to remove and can be removed while barrel is still on frame. This will aalso give you a stronger platform for larger caliber bullets in the future. You never know when a good deal on Encore stuff will come along.

Yeah,

I thought about the Encore.  I was just thinkin about having another Contender Frame and Leave it as a carbine.  I know I'd have to buy a stock.  No matter which I bought, I would want it to transfer as a pistol, and I really don't have a desire for any Encore Pistol barrels though.  I realize the frames are about the same in cost.  I do like the Encore because you can get a 12 gauge barrel, and some other barrels.  If I go that route, I need to unload some stuff I have first.

I have the older Contender Carbine Barrels, I wouldn't get a new one except for the Muzzleloader.

So, anyone got a 50?  Really want to hear about the 50?

I know the Omega's are nice, and probably cheaper, but I was going for getting something a little extra out of the deal.

Just got a 209x50 g2 barrel and will modify for my old contender frame by removing the tang.  Might take awhile to set up as I need a stock and forend to complete.  I will post my progress and results.  Theres info in another post.

Thet are out thier. mostly aftermarket at the gun shows Bill Goodman and PRO Gun Shows. i Have the 45. the Balance is great. the 50 on the G2 is very front heavy like a Kentucky long Gun. I also have the encore 50 and 45. I Prefer the G2 For the weight when carring. When the 50cal is on the G2 it is does not shoot any better. :D  Hope this Helps.
