Shotgun Cleaning??!!
« on: March 22, 2003, 12:28:33 PM »
Hi,
Just went to the trap range to try out my first BP shotgun loads. They all went boom and smoked, and I STILL can't hit anything at a trap range.
BUT I have read how many of you find it easy to get the melted plastic out of the barrel?? O.K. How does that part go again?? I just spent over an hour trying to get that stuff out of the barrel! Somebody give me the instructions again. Perhaps it is because I am not shooting a coach gun and the barrels are longer? I was using 65 gr of ffg and 1 1/8 oz of shot it seemed quite a bit more stout than a target load. Or am I mistaking smoke and noise for power. What loads are ya'll using for CAS??
Thanks
Dennis

107, I just pull the barrels, use the spray nozzel on the kitchen sinkwith hot water. That washes most of it out.  Then use 1/2 paper towel with ballistol water mix wadded up and pushed through. Another pass to dry then 1 with ballistol for protection. wipe the breachface with ballistol, put it back together and ballistol the whole thing.  It takes just about the same amount of time as I spent typing this.

Dennis; the first time is the worst time.  Its not the BP's fault.  Its all them smolieless lounds ya have fire in that scatter gun.  That barrel was already burnished with a coat of plastic and nitrocelluouse residue.  Just clean it like Buttler said (make sure the wife ain't look'n) and coat the tubes with borebutter or such.  Keep shooting and things will get proressively better.  I don't use plastic shotcups with BP and still get the plastic grungies from my hunting load residue.

107ch, You do not need this much lead.  Most of my BP loads are with slightly larger shot and less of it.  7/8 to One ounce is plenty.  I load AA hulls only.  I do NOT use plastic shot cups. I load card & fiber wads designed for this purpose and order from Circey.  Clean as suggested above and buy a "Tornado" style steal bore brush.  Keep makin' smoke!
Good luck to ya!
Do a lot of CAS, and BPRC. Love to shoot them Buffalo Guns, Both silhuette and long range.
