NewMarlin 39s & 1897s-Extra Holes in Receiver: Tap and P
« on: March 16, 2006, 08:12:44 AM »
Dear Guys,

I like the newer Marlin model 39s and 1897s in the Cowboy configurations, except for the two extra holes that are drilled in the left side of the receivers. One is near the bottom, so that you can look in to see a red plastic follower, to make sure the mag tube is empty, the other is near the top of the receiver, which I think is intended to let you look into the closed receiver, to see if there is a shell in the receiver.

Anyway, these definitely do not look Cowboy, and give the receiver a very ugly Swiss-Cheese look. I don't thing they exist on the older models.

Is it feasible to simply have someone tap these two holes with threads, and fill them with filler plug screws?   Is this common practice?  Or, is there something in the way these holes were drilled (at an angle, or larger at the openings) that would prevent this.

Thanks for all advice.
