Sabots in a Lyman Deerstalker???
« on: March 09, 2006, 07:58:26 AM »
I just picked up a Deerstalker carbine in .50 percussion. Deciding on what to shoot out of it, my only other ML is a Flint in .50 I shoot round balls out of. Anyone have experience with sabots in the Deerstalker? Lyman site says 1in48 twist is good for RBs and Maxis, so I'm guessing a sabot and a maxi should be similar bearing surface.
Thanks

Sabots are better suited in a faster twist like 1in 28.

Sabots in a Lyman Deerstalker???

I have a Deerstalker and have tried shooting everything that I could get my hands on. The only sabots that worked for me where T/C 3 piece with a 250g pure lead bullet. The accuracy was very good out past 100 yards, but cleaning the plastic out was a brute. I now use a .495 ball, 18th pillow ticking patch, and 80g of Pyrodex, ot Goex ffg. Another bullet that worked good was the 245g bal-et, from Hornady. I have had this fine hunting rifle for about 14 years now, and it still impresses me.

My Deerstalker impresses me too!
I paid 140 bucks for mine unfired during an off season from an on-line auction.
I thought it might make a good 'beater' gun for the price.
The thing really surprised me.
At 25 yards with 40 to 50 grains of Goex 3fg and a p.r.b. the thing will shoot a 5 shot ragged hole.
At 50 it will hold 1.5" with the same load.
I can't shoot open sights better than that.
At 100 it will shoot 3 to 3.5" with the T/C Maxiball and a variety of sabots from 250 grain to 300 grain.
I consider 100 or so yards to be the practical limit wtih me behind the gun using open sights.
It's a sweetie little carbine, quite a value for the money.
