Who reloads for the 7.62X39?
« on: April 01, 2006, 03:27:58 PM »
And why?
I have an SKS and a set of Lee dies but I'm having a hard time reasoning why I should reload this caliber.
I doubt I'd squeeze any more accuracy out of the rifle and I can't save a penny by reloading.
If I had a bolt action rifle in this caliber then maybe but not for the SKS.
Thoughts?

j, why not? You can down load it for a fun gun.I have a 5.7MMJ that I work the operating handle by hand with a load for squirrel and teaching the kids how to shoot a center fire gun. You COULD try bullets that aren't normally loaded in that cartridge that MIGHT be better for different applications. I must admit that I no longer own an SKS. Also I'm retired and have more time than $$. Reloading gives me some thing to do besides ride the couch and watch tv. just some thoughts!

Why would you think that?  It's a rifle isn't it.  It may be just an SKS, but,  handloading could help.  You could try a host of different bullets from .308 to .312 , hell, you might even find a bullet that that SKS really likes.  If not, then no harm done, just nice little journey down the road to better accuracy that ended up a dead end.

I handload for my Ruger Mini-30 and I have found some very very accurate loads and some very bad ones as well.

Give it a try, what to you have to lose except some bench time and some range time.

I have a Chinese SKS in this caliber.  With iron sites and factory ammo it got 3 to 4 inch 100 yards groups off the bench.  My son likes the gun and wanted to shoot it so I though handloading some cartridges would be good experience for him.  He loaded up some and at the range I was amazed to get a 1.5 to 2 inch 5 shot group with iron sites off the bench.  At least in this case, handloading made a lot of difference.
