Nearly complete for now(56K Dialup beware)
« on: March 18, 2006, 06:44:14 AM »
As some of you guys know I've been working over a newly purchased H&R Ultra .223.   The wood is as done as it'll get for now.  Pad is fitted.  Scope mounted.

I'm going out this weekend if the weather permits to zero it.   Once I use up the .223 ammo I purchased, it'll get rechambered to .220 Swift.  The reamer is on it's way(purchased).

Hmmm...That's great work on the stock...Real nice!  If it shoots half as good as it looks, they you will have a real tack driver.

I can do that..  gimme a few to get something for you.

Hi-resolution pics look great, but Photobucket likes to downsize them for small file sizes.

Sorry for image file size.   What limited software I have wont cut the file size without cropping the image.  I was able to take them as .jpg's convert them to bitmaps, then convert them back to jpg's which cut the file size without cropping or downsizing much.

Thank you.

18+ coats of Ace/Truevalue Tung Oil Finish High Gloss.  I lost count somewhere after 12.   This up coming winter I'll finish it to a really high gloss.

The last few coats didn't want to apply smoothly as the first dozen or so.  So I purchased another bottle of oil thinking it may have been gelling up on me.  But I think it was the paper towels I was using.  The first roll I had applied the oil to a mirror sheen, the second roll and the lint free buffing towels would leave streaks.  Theres at least 3/4 of a bottle of oil in/on the wood.  I did manage to get 99.9% of the streaks out by buffing with a dry buffing rag, then using 3-in-1 oil as a smoothing agent.

I didn't get out to shoot today.  temps in the '30s and a good wind..   I chill too quick to be out playing. lol

My uncle, who's a gun aficionado, is quite impressed for this being a inexpensive H&R.  ...takes quite a bit to impress him seeing he only buys mid to top dollar firearms.

I got that set off of quickdtoo.   You can get them from http://www.gunstocksinc.com/

They are pretty much shaped completely.  Minor fitting is needed at the receiver for the buttstock and you need to have the butt cut for your desired length of pull.

The forearm requires minor fitting for the hinge.  It also needs some channel work to clear the barrel.

If you get a set, have them cut the length of pull and fit a recoil pad.  That way the most you'll need for tools is a sanding block and maybe a dremel rotary tool(not necessary, comes in handy though).

Sanding, oiling and finishing is completely on you..

For walnut, expect to spend 5 solid hours sanding each the forearm and butt.  Then another 2hrs dewhiskering the wood.    If you go with tung oil,  expect to apply at least 10 coats or more depending on how you want it to look.   Each coat takes 10-20min to buff off the prior coat with steelwool, about 5-15 min to apply new coat, and about 4-8 hrs to cure until you can apply the next coat.

You must figure in "oh craps" too..  like finding something had landed on the finish while it was wet/tacky and imbedded itself.  ...cat/dog hair, dust bunnies, spiders.

Once you apply last coat and let it cure, figure in about 20-30 min polishing out the finish with a buffing rag.

I forgot to add that you'll need a longer forearm screw too.

I picked up a stainless steel 10-24x1.5" and cut it down to about 1.25" in length.   ...I think it was 10-24 thread.
