Which action requires the LEAST modifications?
« on: March 17, 2006, 02:31:08 AM »
A Mauser 98 or 48?
I am looking at the price difference, but I do know there are other differences as well.
Is one any stronger than the other?
How about barrel/reciever threads, are they the same?
 Thanks,
 Jeff. :D

I understand the M48 action is slightly shorter than a true M98.

Neither one NEED any modifications at all. They both work perfectly as designed. However, if you want them to do something other than what they are designed for, then they may both need to be changed. What is it you would like?

As far as strength goes. Both being large ring configuration, the strength would be equal. Rigidity would favor a short action [the 48]. If you want a long round ['06 length] you need a long action. If using a shorter round [the 308 length for instance] the 48 is very good.  HTH MV

was maybe a .35 Whelan or .375 Whelan Improved.
Looks like a 98 action must be the call here.
 Thank you all,
 Jeff. :D
