ABSOLUTELY NOT. The #1 1/2 is a fox, coon and mink trap.4coiling isn't going to make the jaw spread any bigger--so it will never be a coyote trap.
You may be lucky enough to hold onto one,but you are going to educate way more coyotes, than you will ever catch.

if i had an minute inkling that i might catch a coyte the smallest trap i would use would be a 1 3/4 and at that it's a marginal coyote trap!  the coyotes we have here there foot fills up the jaws on a 1 3/4.  so im with bog on this one. keep the 1 1/2's for coon and mink

I'm with creekchub, bigger is better when it comes to coyotes. my traps of choice is a beefed up #2 roundjaw or even better a modified #3 double long spring set up a drag with lots of swivels. Of course the bigger traps are #&!! on fox. Worm

The 1 1/2 will catch and hold coyotes under ideal conditions. Not a good choice. Go with #2 or #3 Bridgers or #3 Victors. You can cover them good and still get great catches.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

creekchub,
Why do you say a 1.75 is a marginal coyote trap? The difference between a 1.75 and a 2 is very marginal something like a 1/4 inch. Sizes vary per manufacture so its wise to check actual spread size before you make a purchase.

hey friend i have caught may yotes in 1.5 dukes. i never ment for it to happen, i was making PVC sets-the pipe was @ a 90 degree to the ground- for coons and i had a yote the next day. as well as with dirt hole sets for coons and fox. ALL of my traps are modified. so that helps too

musher what i mean is there is very little room for error!  matter fact all my coyote catches have been in 1 3/4  but  with that said  i have missed more than i have caught.   and   this being my second yr. trapping coyotes if i had to do it all over again and retool  i would buy the larger jaw spread traps. now someone with more experience that  can get spot on with trap placement a 13/4  is an excellent trap.  plus the way the question was asked sounds like dano has never trapped for yotes so in that case i would recomend the largest size leagal.  just my thoughts

I used 1.5 Montgommery round jaws and caught coyotes, but you really have to be dead on with trap placement.  I have purchased myself several # 2's for next year and will be targetting them hard next year.  Anyone setting for fox, with coyote present should use as a minimum a number 2 trap. My modified 1.5's will hold any coyote without a question, but the jaw spread and coyote foot size is the real factor.

The larger the jaw spread the more connections are going to be made per animal visits. I never use anything less than #3's for coyote and bobcat and use #4's in the snow months. Ace

the 1.65 Bridger coilspring trap has the same jawspread as the Sleepy Creek 1 1/2 Offset Coilspring Trap. 5 inches.  I would go with the 1 1/2 offset coilspring Sleepy Creek trap.

I use both #3 modified 4 coil soft catch and a # 3 - 4 coil Bridger. Both work very well, though I must say I like the wider jaw on the Bridger.  When these traps are properly tuned they are very effective.
