best 22lr ammo

hi, new to forums>  i have a few pistols and looking to see what will function for ammo thru my mkII target pistol and i have a smith 22a, and just ordered the beretta neos dlx w6" brll!  i have shot the mkII and never found a ammo other then the stingers that don't cycle!  need ammo for these pistols that will kill a racoon, fast like in one to two shots, not 5 or 6 shots?  anyone try the sniper sub sonic 60gr shells?  
any ideas would help!  kevin

Unfortunately, the only way you're going to really find out what will cycle through your pistols well...is through experimentation.  

For example, most any round (including Stingers) works well in all of my Rugers, but I've had bad luck with Federal bulk ammo.  In my S&W 22A, I can't get high velocity rounds to cycle properly...so I stick with Rem subsonics or Wolfe.

Can't comment on the 60g. .22 rounds...just something about them that doesn't look right in .22 auto pistols.  Maybe one of the other guys has some first-hand experience.

Stingers are unique in that they use a slightly overlength case. They can cause chambering issues ( and issues with match chambers) Any of the other hypervelocity rounds should work fine. Try Remington Yellow Jackets or Vipers.  One between the eyes will drop em like a hammer.

For general all around plinking, I like the Federal bulk packs(550 rounds), or the Winchester bulk ammo.  Lately though I've been using CCI Velocitors for hunting out of my mkII pistol, and squirrel rifle (marlin 880sq).  Really accurate, and hits 'em hard.  Doesn't make a huge exit hole out of the pistol, but out of the rifle it puts about a nickel size or bigger exit hole in them.

The only 22 ammo I will never buy again is the W-W X-Pert, a plain lead HP bullet with a flat nose, wouldn't feed in ANY 22 I ever tried it in, semiauto, bolt, you name it.  I found the Federal and Remington bulk ammo works fine in nearly anything, but the Federal stuff tends to shoot a little better in most of my guns.  But as was stated, it's a trial-and-error process, every gun is different!

I just bought some  remington thunderbolts!  that stuff does not like to feed through my berretta neos or the smith 22a?   all the ammo i keep trying in the smith and neos keep jamming like 1 time per clip?  can't seem to find the right stuff?   well my mkii will take whatever i shove down its throat!  but i dont care to hunt with the mkii, really like the feel of that smith and the neos is nice too!  anouther neat little gun that never seems to jam up is my little phoenix arms!

I had a mkIII target mod. all I ever fed it was dynapoints.  pretty accurate, and took a lot of squirrles.  but I sold it. :cry:  Fortunately my wife let me get a single six in 17hmr. Should be here by monday!  Anyway,  I've read some VERY good things about rem yellow jackets. Supposedly a hard hitting, very accurate round.  A little more expensive than run o the mill stuff, but check midway, they sell it in bulk. I have no idea how it cycles in a semi auto?

Years ago I settled on the Remington High Velocity 40 gr "Golden Bullet". I usally get it in their 100 packs, but have found it in bulk at times. Works great in all my semi, lever and bolts (both handguns and rifles). Once in a while you will find a few per box that is just a little oversized, which prevents the round from just dropping into a revolver's cylinder. So there I use the cheap Federal Power-Flite. These have served me well from small game up to dispatching wounded large game. If I was target shooting or otherwise going for the ultimate, I'm sure I'd have to do further looking. As already mentioned and echoed, each firearms is going to have its preference. Good shooting.

As has been said, you'll only find the ammo that works best and is the most accurate by shooting different brands, and stingers are loaded with longer cases than the other rounds.  Now, for my opinion.  The 22RF is pretty puny out of a handgun and coons are notoriously tough.  If they are rabid, they are tougher still to put down.  I have seen rabid coons take a number of .380 hollow points or 40 grain  22 mags in the lung area at 15 paces and still not die.  The aguila super max is expensive but is the fastest and  best penetrating 22rf available.  It has superior penetration and even has a bit more  in velocity over the to the more fragile stingers.  Then there's Quickshock that breaks into three separate segments, is also slightly faster than stingers, and produces a devastating wound against two or four legged nasties.

I've had better overall results with the Wal-Mart Federal 36g HP bulk packs myself than with any other ammo. They've always been accurate, and they thump small game as good as any 22 LR ammo.

My 10/22 likes damn near anything I put into it, shoots like a dream with Wildcats, but needs a good cleaning afterwards. My MKII can be picky at times, but I hardly ever have a problem with Aguila SE High Velocity Hollow Points. Both Wildcats and the Aguilas only run me about $10 / 500 rounds. Now as for the 60 gr Aguila SSS rounds, I'm hard pressed to get them to feed into my 10/22 and when they do fire, they won't cycle. However, they work just fine in my circa 1960's single shot Stevens .22

I went through a brick of those SSS 60 grains, and they will give you some problems, too much lead and too little casing, only shell thats given me a problem in my .22's.  I always liked a good remington thunderbolt .22lr, never had a problem with that round.

:cb2: I found the SSS 60-gr. stuff grouped well, but dropped like a rock. It's a .22 long (not LR) with a big chunk of lead that makes it as long as a LR. Shot it out of my rifle mainly. It needed all the help it could get.

I had a Mk.II that wouldn't shoot anything well, except CCI Blazers. It was the jammingest thing I have ever seen. Traded it in on a SP101 in .22.

I have tried all kinds of ammunition. Even the dirty ( greasy )Russian stuff. They all fed and fired. But you must keep semi automatic pistols clean. In the case of the Ruger that means stripping it down and learning how to reassembly it. Keep the gun clean and it will feed just about everything.  An other suggestion buy a 25 caliber brush and clean the chamber with it. Just turn it by hand in the chamber with some solvent. I have found this will diminish the number of miss-fires and all but eliminates "stove piping".

So saying all that, I have had problems with the "sub sonic" ammunition cycling enough to pick up and load the next round. They fire and eject the spent shell case but fail to strip the next round from the magazine.

I now have about 10,000 rounds through mine. It likes just about everything but Federal Target Ammunition. ( which miss-fires in mine )

I have a Ruger 22/45 and and it loves Federal bulk hollowpoints. Mini Mags work well too. Winchester Xpert is the one I avoid. As others have mentioned, it doesn't seem to work in most guns. Any good hollowpoint should take care of your needs. You don't need Stingers for that. In fact, Stingers have reliability issues in a lot of semi autos.

Griz, shooting that 60 grain stuff from a rifle doesn't help it, it handicaps it actually. There isn't enough powder to keep pressure up in a rifle barrel so friction slows it down to less velocity than it gets from a pistol barrel. I chronographed some to see.
