20 GA. Slug Gun for Long Range Work?
« on: October 09, 2005, 05:25:36 PM »
I picked up a Mossberg 500 20 gauge the other day for my son. I got a idea that I could get a cantilever slug barrel and scope and shoot the new high velocity sabots and get a little more range out of a slug gun

The big question is how accurate are mossberg rifled barrels?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Another thing I noticed about the Mossberg slug barrels is that they have 1 in 36" twist. I think my remington slug barrels have 1 in 28" twist.

Which is better?

P-man, best thing is to get several different brands of slugs and go test them at the range. That will be the best way to determine accuracy. Firearms can be a bit individualistic wrt to ammo preferences.

There are a lot of things can influence accuracy. A lot of times the gun/barrel gets the blame when how the scope is mounted is the problem. I've never checked the twist on Rem barrels but 1 in 35/36" is the norm for Winchester slug barrels as well as Mossberg.

Neither is better...they will simply shoot different projectiles well. I have guns with both twist rates and they will both shoot most slugs the same. However, there is always a few slugs that only will shoot well in one or the other.

In my Savage 210 which features the slower twist rate I shoot the Remington sabot products. They perform exceedingly well. Therefore from a stability perspective they should also perform well in your Mossberg.
