« on: March 20, 2006, 04:53:07 PM »
I'm thinking about adding this gun in 30-06cal. to my hunting rifles. What are the pros and cons about this rifle and caliber? What is a good $300 scope for it? I'm gonna be shooting to about 300yrds.

good pick ,it was my fist handi, for 300 you can put a lot of scope on that thing , what do you hunt varmints or deer??

pros on the rig :

its the least complained about rifle on this forum (and with this bunch thats hard to do) ,

it most of the time very accurate

ammo is every where if you don't reload and if you do its even better

cons on the rig:

???

???

???

????

i can't think of any (and that from a person that doesn't like the 30-06)
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

with $300 for a scope i'd say the Nikon Buckmasters being they've got a variety of models under $300 from simple 4x, 3-9x, and side focus mil-dot scopes.

My 30-06 Handi is absolutely my favorite rifle.  I have it sighted in for 300 yards.  I practice shooting 4" clay targets at 300 yards.  I load and shoot three bullets, Speer's 125gr TNT for varmits, Sierria 165gr spier point boat tail for Deer and Caribou, Nosler partition 180gr for Bears and Moose.  I also take it to Tennessee and Texas during the winter for Whitetails and Pigs.  It breaks down and fits into a small case for traveling.  The case I use is smaller than an average gun case.  Shorter and easier to handle.

This gun is gonna be use for deers and maybe if I get drawn for the elk tag, I might be using this rifle.

Which one should I get.... synethetic or wood stock?

Anybody have or use Burris signature scope before? I heard they are very good.... and durable.... last a long time.

I originally had a Shepard scope, (It got stolen) I'm currently using a Bushnell Elite 4200 6X24 with Mil Dot.  I had this scope on another gun and switched it.  I'll be going back to a Shepard as soon as I can convience the wife I really need it.

I have the 30-06 with the synthetic stock and like it a lot. Not sure it's any lighter, but holds up well. I have one of the older Simmons .44 Mag scopes on mine and it has held up well. Taken my last four deer with it. I just bought an Elite 3200 for my .308 Savage and think it is a good scope for the $. I don't reload and mine does very well with 150 grain Winchester Power Points.

I know a con..

Once you buy one, you'll wanna buy another..  and another..  ...and another. lol

On the serious side, I know of no-one that was unhappy with their 30-06 Handi.  Well, except my cousin that thinks it kicks a lot due to being slightly lighter then his bolt gun.

A few pro's for this gun/caliber is:  compact, makes a good brush or truck gun, you wont cry if you scratch it, packs plenty of oompff for big game.

But as to all firearm purchases, your mileage may vary.  Some people have good luck with a el'cheapo gun, some people have horrible luck with a $20K gun.

My .30-06 is one of the best shooting Handi's I have.  Does great with Remington and PMP 180's.  The recoil is more than any other Handi I own, but nowhere near what I would consider offensive.  Believe me, I don't like heavy recoiling guns!

I have a Bushnell Banner on it.  Its been on it for two years.  Like Mitch said, you can get a lot of scope for $300 smackers.

Enjoy!

I like mine too. I have had the 3006 Ultra for a few years, It has the ported barrel, anyone else have a ported barrel. I think it makes the gun loud as heck. I even clean the ports with a .22 cal brush. Good accurate and fun to shoot. like the 150 and 160 grain bullets the most.

My '06 Handi has the ported barrel, I think H&R may still have a few left from a bunch of "old stock" they found last year (they found both ported 30-06's and .270's). If you want one fitted to your reciever give CS a call and ask if there are any left. Perhaps speak to Gordon himself or send him an e-mail if you are told they have none, sometimes different people there know different things but they all usually try to be helpful. Be nice to them and they will be nice to you....<><....

Remember, treat people as you would like to be treated, it usually works. For the others, slap them up side the head with a 2x4 (2 by 4) and then tell them now that you have their attention you want to be their friend!!!....<><.... :-D
